As in all of Clark’s songs, the writing here is subtle and evocative. I love the key line of the chorus (“this would be a real good time to hold my hand”), which reads a bit jokey but Clark sings with nervous resignation.
#7 – Brandy Clark – 12 Stories
Last week I wrote about Kacey Musgrave’s excellent debut album. Well, Brandy Clark is the woman I hope Musgraves grows up to become.
The 35-year-old Washington native has carved out a career writing songs for other people (most notably Miranda Lambert and The Band Perry) but her solo debut, 12 Stories, is a true work of art.
The final female country singer on my countdown, Brandy Clark, put out one of the best albums of the year in any genre.
Her 12 Stories is an elegant, focused and resonant work that calls to mind Bonnie Raitt and Mary Chapin Carpenter but still feels wholly original.
Already we’ve had a delightful second album by Pistol Annies, and stellar debuts by Ashley Monroe (one third of the Annies) and Kacey Musgraves (who has ridden her refreshing, gay-friendly millennial outlook to a CMA award for Best New Artist and enough crossover appeal to land a gig on Ellen).
