Song of the Day #3,018: ‘Fearless’ – Taylor Swift

taylor_swiftBack in 2008, Taylor Swift was a country artist with major crossover appeal, and her sophomore album Fearless broke every sales record for a country album on its way to being the biggest selling album of any sort that year.

And that was the lowest point of her career to date.

With apologies to Adele and Beyoncé, Swift is no doubt the most successful, landscape-dominating artist recording today. It’s hard to imagine her next album (whatever and whenever it may be) won’t improve on the gaudy numbers of her most recent smash hit, 1989. Talk about a winning streak.

Song of the Day #3,017: ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ – Charlie Puth feat. Selena Gomez

puth_gomez_dont_talk_anymoreRounding out the latest installment of ‘What the Kids are Listening To’ is ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ by Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez. I haven’t heard much from Puth since the omnipresent ‘See You Again’ last year (though I didn’t realize he’s featured on that horrible ‘Marvin Gaye’ song with Meghan Trainor).

This song I kind of like, and I’ll give the credit to Selena Gomez. Her last album was a delight from start to finish and this track feels like it could have fit right in.

Song of the Day #3,016: ‘Broccoli’ – D.R.A.M. Featuring Lil Yachty

broccoli_dramWe have another repeat in Billboard’s #11 spot — Rihanna’s ‘Needed Me.’ Good song, and one my 10-year-old daughter plays every morning on the way to school, which probably doesn’t win me any parenting awards.

But as inappropriate as ‘Needed Me’ is, it’s got nothing on D.R.A.M.’s ‘Broccoli,’ which sits at #12. This is a moronic collection of horrible stereotypes, rapped by a couple of talentless potheads.

Song of the Day #3,015: ‘Send My Love (To Your New Lover)’ – Adele

adele-25Rounding out Billboard’s top ten this week is ‘Send My Love (To Your New Lover),’ the latest single from Adele’s smash hit 25.

Though Adele destroyed every album sales record with the release of 25, it doesn’t seem like that record has permeated the culture. Compare it to Beyoncé’s Lemonade, which sold far fewer copies but dominated the conversation for months.

Song of the Day #3,014: ‘Ride’ – twenty one pilots

twenty_one_pilots_rideTwenty one pilots have their second top ten song of the week with ‘Ride,’ sitting at #9. According to Wikipedia, this makes them the first alternative artist to have two songs in Billboard’s top ten at the same time. I wonder how they define alternative?

‘Ride’ is my favorite of the three twenty one pilots songs I’ve featured on the blog to date (the other two being ‘Stressed Out‘ and ‘Heathens‘).
