Song of the Day #3,188: ‘Shape Of You’ – Ed Sheeran

Back by popular demand, here’s the latest segment of ‘what the kids are listening to.’ Two weeks of Billboard’s Hot 100, and another chance to decide if the current state if pop music signals the decline of Western civilization.

Holding strong at #1 is Ed Sheeran’s smash hit ‘Shape Of You.’ This is the song’s eighth week in the top spot, and seventh in a row. It’s also Sheeran’s first ever #1 hit, after landing four other songs in the top ten.

Sheeran is extremely versatile. The songs he’s landed on the charts range from tender love ballads to sexy rave-ups like this one, and he’s equally adept at both.

‘Shape Of You’ was originally written for Rihanna, but Sheeran says when he started penning lyrics like “put Van the Man on the jukebox” he knew it was destined for him. As if Rihanna couldn’t be a Van Morrison fan?

[Verse 1]
The club isn’t the best place to find a lover
So the bar is where I go
Me and my friends at the table doing shots
Drinking fast and then we talk slow
And you come over and start up a conversation with just me
And trust me I’ll give it a chance now
Take my hand, stop, put Van the Man on the jukebox
And then we start to dance, and now I’m singing like

[Pre-Chorus]
Girl, you know I want your love
Your love was handmade for somebody like me
Come on now, follow my lead
I may be crazy, don’t mind me
Say, boy, let’s not talk too much
Grab on my waist and put that body on me
Come on now, follow my lead
Come, come on now, follow my lead

[Chorus]
I’m in love with the shape of you
We push and pull like a magnet do
Although my heart is falling too
I’m in love with your body
And last night you were in my room
And now my bedsheets smell like you
Every day discovering something brand new
I’m in love with your body
Oh—I—oh—I—oh—I—oh—I
I’m in love with your body
Oh—I—oh—I—oh—I—oh—I
I’m in love with your body
Oh—I—oh—I—oh—I—oh—I
I’m in love with your body
Every day discovering something brand new
I’m in love with the shape of you

[Verse 2]
One week in we let the story begin
We’re going out on our first date
You and me are thrifty, so go all you can eat
Fill up your bag and I fill up a plate
We talk for hours and hours about the sweet and the sour
And how your family is doing okay
Leave and get in a taxi, then kiss in the backseat
Tell the driver make the radio play, and I’m singing like

[Pre-Chorus]
Girl, you know I want your love
Your love was handmade for somebody like me
Come on now, follow my lead
I may be crazy, don’t mind me
Say, boy, let’s not talk too much
Grab on my waist and put that body on me
Come on now, follow my lead
Come, come on now, follow my lead

[Chorus]
I’m in love with the shape of you
We push and pull like a magnet do
Although my heart is falling too
I’m in love with your body
And last night you were in my room
And now my bedsheets smell like you
Every day discovering something brand new
I’m in love with your body
Oh—I—oh—I—oh—I—oh—I
I’m in love with your body
Oh—I—oh—I—oh—I—oh—I
I’m in love with your body
Oh—I—oh—I—oh—I—oh—I
I’m in love with your body
Every day discovering something brand new
I’m in love with the shape of you

[Bridge]
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on

[Chorus]
I’m in love with the shape of you
We push and pull like a magnet do
Although my heart is falling too
I’m in love with your body
Last night you were in my room
And now my bedsheets smell like you
Every day discovering something brand new
I’m in love with your body
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on
I’m in love with your body
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on
I’m in love with your body
Come on, be my baby, come on
Come on, be my baby, come on
I’m in love with your body
Every day discovering something brand new
I’m in love with the shape of you

  1. Dana says:

I continue to be impressed with Sheeran’s talent and diversity in sound. It’s also nice to see someone who doesn’t fit the mold of a pop idol have such commercial success. Looking forward to more good stuff from Ed in the coming years.

  2. Daniel (the cool guy) says:

This isn’t my favorite Ed Sheeran song though I often find it’s infectious melody stuck in my head. As a young aspiring artist, Ed Sheeran is the artist who I most see as the reason why I could make it. For that reason I try and support all that he does and usually it’s easy to root for someone so talented yet earnest.
