Song of the Day #296: ‘This Time Around’ – Hanson

hansonOf all the guilty pleasures in my collection, the one that requires the most self-confidence for me to stand up and admit to loving is definitely Hanson’s This Time Around.

Now, to be honest, I reject the concept of guilty pleasures. If I like something, I like it… no guilt involved. I think what that phrase really implies is a degree of shame because you like something that “cool” people really shouldn’t like. But I reject that concept as well, because the way I see it, if you reject this album because of the age and appearance of the people who wrote and performed it, that betrays how uncool you really are.

Star Trek

startrekTwo weeks into the season and already I’ve seen the summer movie of the year. Hell, the movie of the year in general until something comes along to challenge the throne.

Any fan of Alias or Lost knows that Star Trek director J.J. Abrams is a master of genre storytelling. It never fails when I’m watching those shows that I check the clock and realize there’s only five minutes left, usually when I assume I’m at the halfway point. He has a gift for pacing that makes even the dialogue scenes fly by at warp speed.

And now he has brought that gift to a high-risk, high-profile reboot of a beloved sci-fi series, and he hasn’t missed a beat. Star Trek is as fast, funny, thoughtful and exciting as any of Abrams’ TV successes, with eye-popping big-screen special effects to boot.

Song of the Day #295: ‘Don’t Speak’ – No Doubt

no_doubtIt’s hard to believe it’s been 14 years since No Doubt first blasted onto the charts with their great album Tragic Kingdom, propelled by the singles ‘Just a Girl’ and especially today’s Song of the Day, ‘Don’t Speak.’

Even harder to believe is that the band actually formed nearly a decade before that release and made a living solely on their energetic live shows while hoping to be signed by a label. Yes, it was 23 years ago that a 17-year-old Gwen Stefani first picked up a microphone and embarked on a career that continues to evolve in surprising ways.

Song of the Day #294: ‘Need You Tonight/Mediate’ – INXS

inxskickI’m giving INXS an encore performance based on the positive response to yesterday’s track. Several commenters mentioned ‘Need You Tonight’ as a favorite INXS track and the YouTube gods have cooperated by allowing the track to live unmolested on their servers, so here you go.

I like how the band paired ‘Need You Tonight’ with ‘Mediate’ not just on the album, which is common enough, but in the video as well. It’s two-for-one with a nice Dylan homage to boot.

Song of the Day #293: ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ – INXS

inxsKeeping it in the 80s for one more day. That decade gets a pretty bad rap, musically — Flock of Seagulls and all that — but as with any decade there are tons of gems to be found.

Take INXS, whose infectious brand of sparse but danceable funk can be heard in modern bands as trendy as Spoon. Yes, INXS has released an album as recently as 2005, but for me their defining sound will always be tied to the mid-80s albums Listen Like Thieves and especially Kick.
