Song of the Day #4,600: ‘La to the Left’ – Lyle Lovett

Lyle Lovett’s 1994 album I Love Everybody has come up on the blog a few times before, and I always say the same thing.

To wit, this collection of odds and ends written before Lovett landed his first album deal was a let-down following the genius run of Pontiac, …and His Large Band and Joshua Judges Ruth, but as let-downs go it contains its fair share of memorable songs.

Today’s track isn’t one of those.

Song of the Day #4,587: ‘Hard to Know’ – Mindy Smith

This is the third Mindy Smith track featured on the blog, all three on Random Weekends. Smith is a country rock artist who was born in Long Island and raised in Tennessee by a Protestant minister. The only album I own of hers, 2004’s One Moment More, is filled with allusions to her Christianity.

The song ‘Come to Jesus,’ her biggest hit, showed up on the blog seven years ago and led to a pretty good discussion about satire, with commenters Dana, Amy and Andrea all chiming in.

Song of the Day #4,586: ‘Avalanche’ – Heather Nova

This is the second time Heather Nova has appeared on the blog, and the first in 10 1/2 years.

Nova is a Bermudian singer-songwriter who spent most of her childhood living on a sailboat in the waters of the Caribbean. That has nothing to do with this song, but it’s a pretty interesting fact. She has been releasing albums for 27 years now, including her latest — Pearl — just two years ago.

Song of the Day #4,580: ‘The Senator’s Daughter’ – Fountains of Wayne

Yesterday’s featured artist was a first-timer on the blog, but today’s is a grizzled veteran. This is the 24th Fountains of Wayne track given Song of the Day treatment, and the 10th to show up on Random Weekends.

‘The Senator’s Daughter’ is the closing track on 1999’s Utopia Parkway, an album I rank alongside Welcome Interstate Managers as the band’s best work. And as much as I love Interstate, with a gun to my head I’d probably go with this one.

Song of the Day #4,579: ‘We’re Not Right’ – David Gray

When you’re on your 4,579th Song of the Day, it’s always a surprise to see an artist pop up who has not once earned a mention on the blog.

Such is the case for today’s featured artist, the British singer-songwriter David Gray. Gray earned international fame with the release of his 1998 album White Ladder, which featured the hit single ‘Babylon.’ Gray’s “folktronica” sound blended modern beats with acoustic folk songs and really hit a nerve in the late 90s.
