Yesterday’s featured artist was a first-timer on the blog, but today’s is a grizzled veteran. This is the 24th Fountains of Wayne track given Song of the Day treatment, and the 10th to show up on Random Weekends.
‘The Senator’s Daughter’ is the closing track on 1999’s Utopia Parkway, an album I rank alongside Welcome Interstate Managers as the band’s best work. And as much as I love Interstate, with a gun to my head I’d probably go with this one.
Utopia Parkway is a tighter album and one that really sticks to its theme. It’s an album about suburban adolescence, with songs that take place in shopping malls, planetariums and senior proms.
How Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger turned that material into a collection of poppy, punky, poignant gems is a testament to the special chemistry they shared.

You need to stop putting a gun to your head! 😜
In discussing our 25 favorite songs, serious consideration was given to including a FOW song like “Valley Winter Song” or “Hey Julie.” Our family is far more familiar with Welcome Interstate Managers, but clearly need to give Utopia Parkway some attention.
