It’s time for another installment of What the Kids are Listening To! It’s been a couple of months since I featured Billboard’s top hits, presumably enough time for some turnover in those ranks.
Or not. At #1 this week is The Weeknd with ‘The Hills,’ a song I featured on August 28 when it was #5 on this list. I caught it on the rise back then, because this is the fifth straight week at #1 for that track.
Here’s a song that’s nearly 50 years old but doesn’t sound a day over 25.
1966’s ‘Paint It Black’ was The Rolling Stones’ third #1 single in the U.S. (following ‘I Can’t Get No Satisfaction’ and ‘Get Off of My Cloud). They would release five more over the next 12 years and never again reach the top of the charts (barring a surprise new release by the octogenarians).
Natalie Merchant, both with 10,000 Maniacs and in her solo career, has created some of the most beautiful and emotional songs I’ve ever heard.
Her unique, emotive vocals blend so well with the well-produced acoustic piano pop. It’s music you can chill out to or cry to. Today’s Random SOTD is a great example.
Rounding out my “freebie list” of the five women I can take to bed without objection by my wife is English actress Nathalie Emanuel, who at 26 is the youngest of the group.
The fourth name on my freebie list is not Jimmy Fallon, but rather Gabrielle Union, his partner in the sketch that serves as today’s Song of the Day.
Union has been on my radar for 15 years, starting with her supporting turn in the beloved romantic comedy Bring it On.
