The week of October 18, 1966, found a trio of repeats atop the Billboard Hot 100, plus one band that I’m planning to explore further, so I’m setting that one aside for now.
That brings us to #5, where the California garage band Count Five peaked with their only hit, ‘Psychotic Reaction.’ The quintet formed in high school and released this single the day two of its members graduated.
Buoyed by the unexpected success of this song, they recorded their first and only album, also titled Psychotic Reaction, released a few more singles, and broke up in 1969.
Count Five didn’t have staying power, but ‘Psychotic Reaction’ did. Born of an extended instrumental and featuring a wild mid-song interlude, it is considered a pioneering song in the garage rock, punk, and acid rock genres.
Old songs. Great memories.

I feel depressed, I feel so bad
‘Cause you’re the best girl that I’ve ever had
I can’t get your love, I can’t get a fraction
Oh, little girl, psychotic reaction
And it feels like this
[Verse 2]
I feel so lonely night and day
I can’t get your love, I must stay away
Well, I need you, girl, by my side
Oh, little girl, would you like to take a ride now?
I can’t get your love, I can’t get satisfaction
Oh, little girl, psychotic reaction
