Song of the Day #6,649: ‘What a Heartache’ – Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton kicked off a side career as a movie actress in 1980’s 9 to 5 and went on to appear in seven more films over the next few decades.

The best of those was 1989’s Steel Magnolias, a sad, funny, Southern melodrama in which Parton more than holds her own opposite a cast of legends.

In between those two major successes came two troubled productions — 1982’s The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and 1984’s Rhinestone.

The former had a miserable set on which Dolly and co-star Burt Reynolds were in emotional turmoil, clashing with each other and the crew. Despite the troubled shoot, and tepid reviews, the movie was a big hit.

Rhinestone, on the other hand, was both a critical and commercial bomb. What started as a sweet romcom about a country chanteuse challenged to make a singer out of a New York cab driver turned — in the hands of co-star Sylvester Stallone — into a much dumber, coarser movie. Stallone completely rewrote the script, shifting the focus to his character and demeaning Parton’s.

The Rhinestone soundtrack, with all but one track penned by Parton, is another story. It’s a genuinely enjoyable collection, save for the few songs performed by Stallone, who — to be fair — isn’t supposed to be a good singer.

Dolly has said she considers this soundtrack among the best work of her career, and today’s SOTD — ‘What a Heartache’ — as one of her finest songs.

The album featured a #1 Country hit in ‘Tennessee Homesick Blues’ and another than reached the top ten, ‘God Won’t Get You.’

Hollywood loves to remake great old movies, but I think it makes more sense to remake the ones that missed the mark. I’d love to see another stab at Rhinestone starring, say, Miranda Lambert and Channing Tatum. Or skew a bit younger with Ella Langley and Callum Turner.

I know I’d watch it.

[Verse 1]
I thought I saw the promise of forever in your eyes
I thought that I was sure of what I saw
You led me to believe that I was special in your life
So I left my heart wide open for the fall

[Chorus]
What a heartache you turned out to be
What a heartache, what a heartache
Love ain’t always what it appears to be
And what a heartache you turned out to be

[Verse 2]
I thought I’d found a safe and loving place inside your heart
And I was warm and willing anytime
The same soft lips that kissed me sweet were lying from the start
But I swear I thought your love was genuine

[Chorus]
What a heartache you turned out to be
What a heartache, what a heartache
Like a switchblade that cuts so swift and deep
What a heartache you turned out to be

[Verse 3]
It just goes to show that you never can tell
I really thought that I knew you well
I still can’t believe I could be deceived so easily
Are all these wishes I’m wishing to myself
Like rusty coins in a wishing well?
Wishes come true, they come false, as well
It’s too late for you and me

[Outro]
Oh what a heartache, what a heartbreak
Love is two-faced and easy to believe
What a heartache, what a heartache
What a mistake to think that I could believe
What a heartache you turned out to be
Oh what a heartache you turned out to be
