Song of the Day #6,643: ‘Here You Come Again’ – Dolly Parton

Three years and five more solo albums separate Jolene from Here You Come Again, the next album I’m covering in this Dolly Parton Shallow Dive.

Those albums included Love is a Butterfly, the title song of which gave her another #1 hit on the Country charts; Dolly, a collection of love songs; and New Harvest…First Gathering, a self-produced album that saw her making a play for a pop audience.

She continued that move toward pop with Here You Come Again, and it paid off with her first Platinum certification. The album also gave her a top five hit on the Hot 100 in the title song.

This has long been my favorite Dolly Parton song, so I was bummed to learn that she didn’t write it (married songwriting partners Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil did). In fact, Parton penned only four of this album’s ten tracks, opting to work with other writers as she shifted her attention to pop.

Dolly did write two of the best-performing songs on the album: ‘Two Doors Down’ and ‘It’s All Wrong, But It’s All Right.’ The former was aimed at the pop market and the latter the country market, and both found success (‘Two Doors Down’ made it to #19 on the Billboard Hot 100).

This album also features ‘Me and Little Andy,’ a bizarre song about a lost girl and her dog that ends with both dying. Parton sings half of the verses in a creepy little-girl voice that is (unintentionally, I assume) quite disturbing.

[Verse 1]
Here you come again
Just when I’d begun to get myself together
You waltz right in the door
Just like you’ve done before
And wrap my heart ’round your little finger

[Verse 2]
Here you come again
Just when I’m about to make it work without you
You look into my eyes
And lie those pretty lies
And pretty soon I’m wondering’ how I came to doubt you

[Chorus]
All you got to do is smile that smile
And there go all my defenses
Just leave it up to you and in a little while
You’re messin’ up my mind and fillin’ up my senses

[Verse 3]
Here you come again
Lookin’ better than a body has a right to
And shakin’ me up so that all I really know
Is here you come again
And here I go

[Chorus]
All you got to do is smile that smile
And there go all my defenses
Just leave it up to you and in a little while
You’re messin’ up my mind and fillin’ up my senses

[Verse 4]
Here you come again
Lookin’ better than a body has a right to
And shakin’ me up so
That all I really know
Is here you come again
And here I go

[Outro]
Here I go
And here I go
And here I go
Here you come again
And here I go
Here I go
And here I go
