Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald held the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 the week of June 21, 1986, with ‘On My Own.’ It was the second of three weeks the song spent at #1.
Just behind it was Billy Ocean’s ‘There’ll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry),’ which eventually reached #1 and spent a single week there. It timed that achievement well, becoming the 600th #1 hit on the Hot 100.
This is also the only song in history with the contraction “there’ll” in the title to hit #1. I present that as a challenge to Taylor Swift.
Note: Happy Father’s Day to my own dad, and to all the dads reading today.
Sometimes I wonder, by the look in your eye
When I’m standing besides, there’s a fever burning deep inside
Is there another in your memory
Do you think of that someone when you hear that special melody?
I always stop and think of you especially
When the words of a love song
Touch the very heart of me
[Chorus]
There’ll be sad songs to make you cry
Love songs often do
They can touch the heart of someone new
Saying I love you (I love you)
[Verse 2]
I often wonder, how it could be
You loving me, two hearts in perfect harmony
I’ll count the hours until that day
Rhapsody plays, a melody for you and me
Until the moment that you give your love to me
You’re the one I care for, the one that I would wait for
[Chorus]
There’ll be sad songs to make you cry
Love songs often do
They can touch the heart of someone new
Saying I love you (I love you)
There’ll be sad songs to make you cry
Love songs often do
They can touch the heart of someone new
Saying I love you
[Verse 3]
You’re my desire
You take me higher
My love is like a river running so deep
I always stop and think of you especially
When the words of a love song
Touch the very heart of me
[Chorus]
There’ll be sad songs to make you cry
Love songs often do
They can touch the heart of someone new
Saying I love you (I love you)
There’ll be sad songs to make you cry
Love songs often do
They can touch the heart of someone new
Saying I love you (I love you)
