Song of the Day #6,337: ‘Walk Hard’ – Dewey Cox

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, released in 2007, probably should have ended all musical biopics. It’s a ruthless satire of then-recent hits Walk the Line and Ray that exposes every clich&e and tired trope of the genre.

And yet, Hollywood keeps churning them out. In just the past few years we’ve seen movies about Elvis, Bob Marley, Robbie Williams, Amy Winehouse, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen.

Some manage to steer clear of the landmines better than others, but they all summon the ghost of Dewey Cox to some degree. I can’t watch a musical biopic flashback without hearing the phrase “Dewey cox has to think about his whole life before he plays.”

Dewey is played winningly by John C. Reilly, whose Oscar-nominated turn in the 2002 musical Chicago suggested he had the vocal chops to tackle this material.

Today’s song, ‘Walk Hard,’ is Dewey Cox’s first single. He plays it to win over a skeptical music exec and it becomes a radio hit 35 minutes after its release, sparking Dewey’s rise to fame and all the problems that come with it.

Walk hard, hard
Down life’s rocky road
Walk bold, hard
That’s my creed, my code

I’ve been scorned and slandered and ridiculed too
Had to struggle everyday my whole life through
Seen my share of the worst that this world can give
But I still got a dream and a burning rage to live

Walk hard, hard
When they say, “You’re all done”
Walk bold, hard
Though they say, “You’re not the one”

Even if you’ve been told time and time again
That you’re always gonna lose and you’re never gonna win
Gotta keep that vision in your mind’s eye
When you’re standing on top of a mountain high

You know when I was a boy, folks used to say to me
“Slow down Dewey, don’t walk so hard”
And I used to tell them, “Life’s a race and I’m in it to win it
And I’ll walk as damn hard as I please
How do I walk boys?”

When I meet my maker on my dying day
Gonna look him in the eye and by God I’ll say
“I gave my word and my word was good
I took it in the face and I walked as hard as I could”

Walk hard, hard
Walk hard, hard
Walk hard, hard
Walk hard…

I’d say a love of biopics makes loving this movie even easier.
