Throwing back to the week of June 21, 1975, we find the husband and wife duo Captain & Tennille atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Love Will Keep Us Together,’ their debut single.
The track is a faithful cover of a Neil Sedaka song released a couple of years earlier. Toni Tennille gives a nod to Sedaka in the final seconds, singing “Sedaka is back” over the fade-out.
Captain & Tennille landed seven Top 10 songs during the five-year span of 1975-1979, including another chart-topper in ‘Do That To Me One More Time.’
I mentioned today’s SOTD to my wife and she commented that it’s a song about a woman asking her man not to cheat on her. I realized I’d never paid any attention to the lyrics.
That happens to me a lot. I might even sing along, knowing the words but not assigning any meaning to them. There are some artists whose lyrics I give close attention, but I think mostly I experience vocals as just another element of the sound.
Old songs. Great memories.

Love
Love will keep us together
Think of me, babe whenever
Some sweet talking girl comes along
Singing a song
Don’t mess around
You just got to be strong
[Chorus]
Just stop
‘Cause I really love you
Stop, I’ll be thinking of you
Look in my heart
And let love keep us together
[Verse 2]
You
You belong to me now
Ain’t gonna set you free now
When those girls start hanging around
Talking me down
Hear with your heart
And you won’t hear a sound
[Chorus]
Just stop
‘Cause I really love you
Stop, I’ll be thinking of you
Look in my heart
And let love keep us together
[Bridge]
Young and beautiful
Someday your looks will be gone
When the others turn you off
Who’ll be turnin’ you on
I will, I will, I will
I will, be there to share forever
Love will keep us together
I said it before
And I’ll say it again
While others pretend
I need you now and I need you then
[Chorus]
Just stop
‘Cause I really love you
Stop, I’ll be thinking of you
Look in my heart
And let love keep us together
Whatever
Whatever, I will, I will, I will, I will
You better stop
‘Cause I really love you
Stop, I’ve been thinkin’ of you
Look in my heart
And let love keep us together
Whatever
Whatever, I will, I will, I will
[Outro]
Sedaka is back!
Kinda hard to miss the subject matter of this song, although I get how often times darker lyrics can be obscured in a bright pop song. Let Fiona Apple do a cover of this with some dissonant dramatic piano chords and vocal delivery and I’m sure the lyrical meaning would be inescapable.🤣
The lyrics definitely describe her intentions although I don’t recall thinking about that when I listened to it so long ago 🤷♀️
