Song of the Day #5,941: ‘Living on the Run’ – Miranda Lambert

Continuing my ranking of the songs on Miranda Lambert’s new album, Postcards from Texas

#8. ‘Looking Back On Luckenbach’

Another wistful ode to a Texas town, this song nods to Luckenbach (pronounced Luke-en-bach), a tiny town 90 miles west of Austin.

The city had its heyday, such as it was, in the late 1800s and early 1900s before becoming a ghost town through most of the 20th century. Its current listed population is three — yes, three. But it is still home to frequent musical events and one of the only active businesses is a souvenir shop where you can pick up a t-shirt featuring the town’s motto, “Everybody’s Somebody in Luckenbach.”

I just realized that my bottom seven songs on this list are the first seven songs on the album, which is a testament to the strength of the back half of Postcards from Texas.

#7. ‘Living on the Run’

This song is the album’s closing track, and continues Lambert’s tradition of including a cover — often one originally recorded by a man. ‘Living on the Run’ was originally a deep cut on a 1976 album by David Allan Coe, an outlaw country artist.

Lambert doesn’t bother swapping out genders, singing about loving a “woman in Tennessee,” although she did alter the original lyric, which had the singer killing a woman in Tennessee instead.

I like how that change turns the jail break from a literal one to an escape from a relationship. It makes the song fit neatly into the overall theme of Postcards from Texas.

[Verse 1]
Seems like it’s rainin’ harder today
Rain must of known I was comin’ this way
It ain’t easy livin’ on the run
I pick up my step, pull my belt down tight
I can make it to the border by Saturday night
It ain’t easy livin’ on the run

[Chorus]
Well, I loved me a woman in Tennessee
Broke free from the jail, now she’s gunnin’ for me
I’m on the run, livin’ on the run
I’m on the run, livin’ on the run

[Verse 2]
A woman wanted more than a man could steal
From the bottom of the decks where I learned to deal
It ain’t easy livin’ on the run
Women love an outlaw, so they say
I’ll be an outlaw ’til my dyin’ day
It ain’t easy livin’ on thе run

[Chorus]
Yeah, I left me a woman in Tеnnessee
Broke free from the jail, now she’s gunnin’ for me
I’m on the run, livin’ on the run
I’m on the run, livin’ on the run

[Chorus]
Well, I love me a woman in Tennessee
I broke free from the jail, now she’s gunnin’ for me
I’m on the run, livin’ on the run
Yeah, well, I loved me a woman in Tennessee
I broke free from the jail, now she’s gunnin’ for me
I’m on the run, livin’ on the run
I’m on the run, livin’ on the run

I’m curious how a deep cut from a 1976 album by a lesser known country artist gets on Miranda Lambert’s radar in the first place.
