In a new annual tradition, I’ll start January by recapping Billboard’s Hot 100 songs of the previous year. If I’ve been good about keeping an ear open to “What the Kids are Listening To,” I should get pretty far down the list after weeding out the songs I’ve already featured.
Last year, I made it all the way to #27 before reaching a song new to the blog. This year, I didn’t do nearly as well. My first entry was the #9 song of 2023.

At #9 is ‘Snooze’ by SZA, one of two artists to have two songs in the year-end top ten (The Weeknd is the other). ‘Snooze’ was the sixth single from SZA’s 2002 album SOS, and peaked at #2 on the Hot 100, on its way to spending the entire year somewhere on the chart.
This song had its top ten stretch in-between my drop-ins on the Hot 100, but had enough staying power all year to end up at #9 overall. An admirable performance by a sultry slow jam.
