Song of the Day #5,433: ‘That’s the Way Love Goes’ – Janet Jackson

It’s a family affair this weekend. A decade after Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’ topped the Hot 100, his sister Janet did the same with ‘That’s the Way Love Goes.’ We’re throwing back to the week of May 15, 1993, when the lead single of Janet Jackson’s album Janet dominated the charts.

‘That’s the Way Love Goes’ and Janet shifted Jackson’s image in a sultry, sexually provocative new direction. The song’s video found her dancing slinkily in a sleeveless half-shirt surrounded by her backup dancers (one of whom is a then unknown Jennifer Lopez).

The song was a massive hit, spending eight weeks in the top spot of the Hot 100. Surprisingly, that’s a longer run at #1 than any song Michael Jackson ever recorded.

[Intro]
Like a moth to a flame, burned by the fire
My love is blind, can’t you see my desire?
That’s the way love goes
That’s the way love
That’s the way love
That’s the way love goes
Like a moth to a flame, burned by the fire (That’s the way)
My love is blind, can’t you see my desire? (That’s the way)
Like a moth to a flame, burned by the fire (That’s the way)
My love is blind, can’t you see my desire?
That’s the way love goes
Like a moth to a flame, burned by the fire
That’s the way, that’s the way
That’s the way love goes
That’s the way love goes
My love is blind, can’t you see my desire?
That’s the way, that’s the way
That’s the way love goes

[Verse 1]
Come with me, don’t you worry
I’m gonna make you crazy
I’ll give you the time of your life
I’m gonna take you places
You’ve never been before and
You’ll be so happy that you came
Ooh, I’m gonna take you there, ooh

[Chorus]
That’s the way love goes
That’s the way love goes (That’s the way love goes)
That’s the way love goes (Desire, that’s the way)
That’s the way love goes (Desire, that’s the way, that’s the way love goes)

[Verse 2]
Don’t mind if I light candles, I like to watch us play and
Baby, I’ve got on what you like
Come closer, baby, closer, reach out and feel my body
I’m gonna give you all my love (That’s the way love goes)
Oh, sugar don’t you hurry, you’ve got me here all night
Just close your eyes and hold on tight (That’s the way, that’s the way)
Ooh, baby, don’t stop, don’t stop, go deeper, baby, deeper
You feel so good I’m gonna cry
Oh, I’m gonna take you there, ooh

[Chorus]
That’s the way love goes
That’s the way love goes (That’s the way love goes)
That’s the way love goes
That’s the way love goes (That’s the way love goes)
That’s the way love goes
That’s the way love goes (Don’t you know? Oh, that’s the way)

[Interlude]
Like a moth to a flame, burned by the fire
My love is blind, can’t you see my desire?
Like a moth to a flame, burned by the fire
My love is blind, can’t you see my desire?

[Bridge]
That’s the way, that’s the way (Ooh)
That’s the way, that’s the way (That’s the way love goes)
That’s the way, that’s the way
That’s the way love goes (That’s the way love goes)
That’s the way, that’s the way
That’s the way, that’s the way (That’s the way love goes, it goes, it goes)
That’s the way, that’s the way
That’s the way love goes

[Chorus]
That’s the way love goes
That’s the way love goes (That’s the way love goes)
That’s the way love goes (That’s the way love goes)
That’s the way love, that’s the way love
That’s the way love, that’s the way love
That’s the way love, that’s the way love
That’s the way love goes

  1. Amy says:

    1) Janet is stunning. 2) I don’t recall this song at all! 3) eh… can’t believe this song topped the charts; it’s a vibe more than a song. 4) Was this album released before Reputation?

    • Clay says:

      Which Reputation?

      • Amy says:

Sorry; I confused the title Control with Reputation. I’ve now done the deep dive and reload that Control was, of course, much earlier. She was only 20 when it was released. While I’m unfamiliar with the songs on Janet (a bit odd to release an album bearing your name as your 6th album, no?), I vividly remember the black and white video for another song (Without You) on this album (thought that song, too, only becomes familiar during its chorus).

Control, on the other hand… those songs I know.

        • Dana Gallup says:

Amy’s album confusion continues as “Love will Never Do (Without You)” was on Rhythm Nation.😉

  2. Dana Gallup says:

I don’t really know this song either, and I don’t think I know anything else from this album. I’m far more familiar with Control ( the “Reputation” album for Amy😉) and Rhythm Nation.
