Continuing my look at 1975, first by counting down my own top albums of that year.
#3 – Fleetwood Mac – Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled album was the band’s tenth release but the first with the legendary lineup that would propel them to superstardom.
Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined current band members Mick Fleetwood and John and Christine McVie, bringing along some great compositions (‘Rhiannon,’ ‘I’m So Afraid,’ ‘Monday Morning’) and their prodigious guitar/vocal skills.
Despite some early tensions, the quintet clicked and ended up recording the band’s first #1 and multi-platinum album.
Fleetwood Mac lives a bit in the shadow of Rumours, which followed two years later, but it’s an excellent collection in its own right. In addition to the songs mentioned above, the album features Christine McVie’s classics ‘Over My Head’ and ‘Say You Love Me’ as well as her rich, lovely ‘Warm Ways.’ Buckingham takes lead vocals on ‘World Turning,’ ‘Blue Letter,’ and the elegant ‘Crystal.’
And in today’s SOTD, ‘Landslide,’ Nicks delivers one of the greatest songs of all time, a hauntingly beautiful tribute to life’s fragility.
I took my love, took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills
‘Til the landslide brought me down
[Verse 2]
Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin’ ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
Hmm-hmm, hmm-hmm
[Chorus]
Well, I’ve been afraid of changin’
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I’m getting older too
[Chorus]
Well, I’ve been afraid of changin’
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I’m getting older too
Oh, I’m getting older too
[Verse 3]
Oh-oh, take my love, take it down
Oh-oh, climb a mountain and turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide bring it down
[Outro]
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide will bring it down
Oh-ohh, the landslide bring it down
This just reaffirms what I said yesterday. 1975 was a great year for music!
Damn, 1975 was stacked!
