Yesterday I featured David Crosby, and today is dedicated to another music legend we lost in recent weeks: Jeff Beck.
The English guitarist is widely considered one of the greatest talents to ever strap on the instrument. Beck started his career in the mid-60s as a member of The Yardbirds (replacing Eric Clapton) and went on to have a solo career blending largely instrumental rock music with blues and jazz.
Beck released dozens of albums and won eight Grammys, and though he never managed to land a top ten single in the U.S. or his native UK, he was an influence on every modern guitarist.
He succumbed to bacterial meningitis in his southern England home at age 78.
In keeping with your theme from last week, it should be noted that Beck was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: first as a member of the Yardbirds (1992) and secondly as a solo artist (2009).
In 1985 Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart’s cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready” peaked at number 5 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs and hit only #48 on the Hot 100. A great, great cover.
