Song of the Day #5,301: ‘The Blade’ – Ashley Monroe

Today’s random selection is the title track from Ashley Monroe’s 2015 album The Blade, the country singer-songwriter’s third solo album.

The Blade is my favorite Monroe album (though to be fair, I haven’t listened to her most recent release in depth). The production gives this batch of songs a rootsy pop-rock flavor that fits her voice and melodies well. At times on this record Monroe reminds me of an airier Bonnie Raitt.

This is the only song on the album not co-written by Monroe, making it an interesting choice for a title track. I like the country tradition of singers highlighting the work of songwriters who work behind the scenes. Having ‘The Blade’ as a featured track gave Monroe a chance to shout out the contribution of the song’s writers, Marc Beeson, Jamie Floyd, and Allen Shamblin.

[Verse 1]
I let your love in, I have the scar
I felt the razor against my heart
I thought we were both in all the way
But you caught it by the handle
And I caught it by the blade

[Verse 2]
You said “goodbye, it’s not the end
And if you need me, I’m still your friend”
Well, that’s easy for you to say
Cause you caught it by the handle
And I caught it by the blade

[Chorus]
That’s the risk you run when you love, when you love
And you give it all you’ve got to give
Knowing all along there’s a chance, there’s a chance
You’ll reach and they won’t
You’ll bleed and they don’t

[Verse 3]
For you, it’s over; for me, it’s not
I kept trying and you just stopped
Now I know how you can sound so brave
Cause you caught it by the handle, baby
And I caught it by the blade

[Chorus]
That’s the risk you run when you love, when you love
And you give it all you’ve got to give
Knowing all along there’s a chance, there’s a chance
You’ll reach and they won’t
You’ll bleed and they don’t

[Outro]
I thought we were both in all the way
But you caught it by the handle
And I caught it by the blade
You caught it by the handle, baby
And I caught it by the blade
