My Favorite 2022 Albums
#4 – Midnights – Taylor Swift
I just spent a week ranking every song on this album, so I won’t go into a lot of detail here. Suffice it to say that Swift is both a great artist and a great superstar, with a keen sense of how she’s evolving in both of those roles, and Midnights is perhaps the best synthesis yet.
That doesn’t make it my favorite Taylor Swift album (on the contrary, I’d place it in her bottom third) but it is a brilliant piece of pop craftsmanship that only she could have delivered.
Everything here felt instantly familiar after just a couple of listens. Even the Midnights songs I like least get stuck in my head.
I spy with my little tired eye
Tiny as a firefly
A pebble that we picked up last July
Down deep inside your pocket
We almost forgot it
Does it ever miss Wicklow sometimes?
Ooh, ooh
[Chorus]
They said the end is comin’
Everyone’s up to somethin’
I find myself runnin’ home to your sweet nothings
Outside, they’re push and shovin’
You’re in the kitchen hummin’
All that you ever wanted from me was sweet nothin’
[Verse 2]
On the way home
I wrote a poem
You say, “What a mind”
This happens all the time
Ooh, ooh
[Chorus]
‘Causе they said the end is comin’
Evеryone’s up to somethin’
I find myself runnin’ home to your sweet nothings
Outside, they’re push and shovin’
You’re in the kitchen hummin’
All that you ever wanted from me was nothin’
[Bridge]
Industry disruptors and soul deconstructors
And smooth-talking hucksters out glad-handing each other
And the voices that implore, “You should be doing more”
To you, I can admit that I’m just too soft for all of it
Ooh
[Chorus]
They said the end is comin’
Everyone’s up to somethin’
I find myself runnin’ home to your sweet nothings
Outside, they’re push and shovin’
You’re in the kitchen hummin’
All that you ever wanted from me was sweet nothin’
They said the end is comin’ (They said the end is comin’)
Everyone’s up to somethin’ (Everyone’s up to somethin’)
I find myself runnin’ home to your sweet nothings
Outside, they’re push and shovin’ (Outside, they’re push and shovin’)
You’re in the kitchen hummin’ (You’re in the kitchen hummin’)
All that you ever wanted from me was sweet nothin’
I’ll be curious to see if this album climbs in your rankings in the future.
My justice for “Question…?” campaign will continue 😤
But I adore “Sweet Nothing” which was my initial standout favorite and stays right at the top of this top tier album :p
I’d love to hear your 3am track thoughts at some point! Aaron Dessner’s much more present through all of those.
We share very similar feelings on this record. I agree that only she could deliver it, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t expect more from the package. Albeit, a very good package.
Love this album, which is in the top tier for me, and is easily my fave of the year, but, I, too, haven’t listened to nearly enough new releases for that yet to be a meaningful placement.
