Continuing my look at 2004, first by counting down my own top ten albums of that year.
#5 – Loretta Lynn – Van Lear Rose
Today’s selection is appropriately timed, given the passing of country legend Loretta Lynn just three weeks ago at the age of 90.
I know very little about Lynn’s career or her music, and I don’t see a deep dive of her 61 studio albums in my future, but I do own one of her albums, and it’s a beauty.
Van Lear Rose is a collaboration between Lynn and Jack White, who produced the album, co-wrote one track and plays multiple instruments throughout. Lynn wrote every song on the album, a first in her career.
The result is a sonically beautiful, emotionally resonant tour through the then 72-year-old’s life and career. Some songs, like today’s SOTD, are charmingly autobiographical, while others bring new shades to familiar country tropes. Sonically, the whole set respectfully tweaks the formula the coal miner’s daughter has honed over all those years.
Van Lear Rose received massive critical acclaim and became Lynn’s highest-charting album to date on the Billboard 200 (until it was unseated by its follow-up, 2016’s Full Circle).
Well, here’s the story of my life
Listen and I’ll tell it twice
Yeah hey, yeah hey, yeah hey
Well, I was borned in old Kentucky
In them hills where folks are lucky
And it’s paradise to me
[Chorus 1]
Well, I got a feller right over the hill
If he asks me to marry, I know I will
He asked me to marry, got kids of four
And I’m telling you I don’t want no more
Yeah hey, yeah hey, yeah hey
[Verse 2]
Doo got me a guitar, I wrote me a song
Moved to Nashville, it wasn’t long
Till I was on The Grand Ole Opry
We bought us a mansion on the hill
Living big like we were big deals
Scarlett O’Hara, Gone With the Wind, I was pregnant again
Oh gee, oh Lord, I swear the babies are coming in pairs
[Refrain]
Yeah hey, yeah hey, yeah hey
[Chorus 2]
Well, some big shot from Hollywood
Thought a movie about my life would be good
It was a big hit, made a big splash
What I wanna know is what happened to the cash?
Yeah hey, yeah hey, yeah hey
[Chorus 3]
Now me and Doo married 48 years
Six kids later, a lot of laughter and tears
I have to say that I’ve been blessed
Not bad for this old Kentucky girl, I guess
Yeah hey, yeah hey, yeah hey
Yeah hey, yeah hey, yeah hey
[Outro]
Well, here’s the story of my life
Listen and I’ll tell it twice
Yeah hey, yeah hey, yeah hey
Lynn was still making albums at 84, and that album was her highest charting in her career? That’s impressive!
