Song of the Day #5,205: ‘The Loco-Motion’ – Little Eva

It took three years for the second song by two different artists to reach #1. And, wouldn’t you know it, the same co-writers were responsible.

Gerry Goffin and Carole King wrote ‘The Loco-Motion’ for Little Eva, who released her version in 1962. Twelve years later, Grand Funk Railroad saw their take on the song hit #1, giving them their second chart-topper in as many years (‘We’re an American Band’ was the first).

Little Eva was the stage name of Eva Boyd, a young singer who worked as a nanny for the married Goffin and King. When they heard Boyd sing, they suggested she record the track, leading to her only #1 hit. She did reach the top twenty twice more over the next year, singing two other Goffin/King collaborations.

Now that’s one successful babysitting gig.

While ‘The Loco-Motion’ is associated with a line dance, the song was written before the dance was developed. Boyd came up with the steps once the song was popular.

In addition to Grand Funk’s 1974 hit version of the song, Australian singer Kylie Minogue made a splash with her own recording of ‘The Loco-Motion.’ The song reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Minogue’s highest charting hit in the United States, and bringing ‘The Loco-Motion’ this close to being the only song to reach #1 by three different artists.

[Verse 1]
Everybody’s doin’ a brand new dance, now
(Come on, baby, do the Loco-Motion)
I know you’ll get to like it if you give it a chance now
(Come on, baby, do the Loco-Motion)
My little baby sister can do it with me
It’s easier than learnin’ your ABCs
So come on, come on
Do the Loco-Motion with me

[Chorus]
You gotta swing your hips, now
Come on, baby
Jump up, jump back
Well, I think you’ve got the knack
Whoa, whoa

[Verse 2]
Now that you can do it, let’s make a chain, now
(Come on, baby, do the Loco-Motion)
A chugga-chugga motion like a railroad train, now
(Come on, baby, do the Loco-Motion)
Do it nice and easy, now, don’t lose control
A little bit of rhythm and a lot of soul
Come on, come on
Do the Loco-Motion with me

[Verse 3]
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Move around the floor in a Loco-Motion
(Come on, baby, do the Loco-Motion)
Do it holding hands if you get the notion
(Come on, baby, do the Loco-Motion)
There’s never been a dance that’s so easy to do
It even makes you happy when you’re feelin’ blue
So come on, come on
Do the Loco-Motion with me

[Outro]
(Come on, do the Loco-Motion) You gotta swing your hips, now (Come on, do the Loco-Motion) That’s right
You’re doin’ fine (come on, do the Loco-Motion)
Come on, baby (come on, do the Loco-Motion)
Mm, jump up, jump back (come on, do the Loco-Motion)
You’re lookin’ good

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I’ve heard both versions before, but am actually more familiar with the first (nanny) version in this case.

  2. Russ Paris says:

This is one of the few times both an original and a remake are really good. I still have both 45s.
