Song of the Day #5,131: ‘One More Try’ – George Michael

My final Stranger Things soundtrack suggestion is one of the four #1 singles produced by George Michael’s blockbuster solo debut, Faith.

Not ‘Faith’ or ‘Father Figure,’ which are both a bit too adult for a show focused on teenagers, and not ‘Monkey,’ which is a great dance track but a bit too silly for a show about monsters threatening all life on Earth.

No, I’m going with the melancholy ‘One More Try,’ a slow burn ballad that I could see scoring an emotional scene on the show and trending on TikTok, just as Michael’s ‘Careless Whisper’ did.

Michael has remained relevant after his untimely death, but I believe this song is due for a re-appreciation.

That wraps my two weeks of Stranger Things speculation. I hope to check back a year or so from now and see that the showrunners included one of my suggested songs.

I promise not to sue if it happens.

[Verse 1]
I’ve had enough of danger
And people on the streets
I’m lookin’ out for angels
Just tryin’ to find some peace
Now I think it’s time
That you let me know
So if you love me
Say you love me
But if you don’t
Just let me go

[Chorus]
‘Cause teacher
There are things that I don’t want to learn
And the last one I had
Made me cry
So I don’t want to learn to
Hold you, touch you
Think that you’re mine
Because it ain’t no joy
For an uptown boy
Whose teacher has told him goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

[Verse 2]
When you were just a stranger
And I was at your feet
I didn’t feel the danger
Now I feel the heat
That look in your eyes
Telling me “No”
So you think that you love me
Know that you need me
I wrote the song, I know it’s wrong
Just let me go

[Chorus]
‘Cause teacher
There are things that I don’t want to learn
And the last one I had
Made me cry
So I don’t want to learn to
Hold you, touch you
Think that you’re mine
Because it ain’t no joy
For an uptown boy
Whose teacher has told him goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

[Bridge]
So when you say that you need me
That you’ll never leave me
I know you’re wrong, you’re not that strong
Let me go

[Chorus (variant)]
And teacher
There are things that I still have to learn
But the one thing I have is my pride
Oh, so I don’t want to learn to
Hold you, touch you
Think that you’re mine
Because there ain’t no joy
For an uptown boy
Who just isn’t willin’ to try

[Outro]
I’m so cold inside
Maybe just one more try

  1. Dana Gallup says:

We just watched the episode where the Kate Bush song was again used. So emotionally powerful! I can see why that song has become such a viral sensation.

  2. Amy says:

We watched this season after you were already in the midst of this theme, so I wanted to revisit it now that I’ve digested it all. I know I’m working backward, but I love this theme for your blog – great way to feature songs from the 80’s and reflect on the specific vibe that is Stranger Things. And, yup, I could totally hear this tune playing during an emotional reunion between Dustin and Eddie (who is now a vampire ;P)
