Song of the Day #4,993: ‘Campus’ – Vampire Weekend

It’s been more than two years since I last featured a Vampire Weekend song on the blog — a whole pandemic!

It’s been just shy of three years since the band released a new album. 2019’s Father of the Bride, their fourth release, was the first without founding member and co-songwriter Rostam Batmanglij. The left lead singer Ezra Koenig to carry the creative weight, a role he seemed to relish.

But no new music since.

That might change soon, according to a December podcast discussion between Koenig and Blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus. Here’s what Koenig had to say about the possibility of new music from the band:

“Yeah, we’ve been working on music and, yeah, we were just recording in England for a while, now back in L.A., working with everybody, and, yeah, I mean, I think we’re… I’m always hesitant to…Sometimes I oversell how close we are with the record because who really knows? But we almost have an album’s worth of songs. And, as you well know, you could tinker with a song forever; change the arrangement, change the lyrics, whatever. But, in that sense we’re close. I have no idea how long it’ll take to finish, but we’re feeling really good about the new material. So, yeah, a lot of studio time to come after the holidays.”

[Verse 1]
I wake up, my shoulders cold
I’ve got to leave here, before I go
I pull my shirt on, walk out the door
Drag my feet along the floor
I pull my shirt on, walk out the door
Drag my feet along the floor

[Pre-Chorus]
Then I see you, you’re walking ‘cross the campus
Cruel professor, studying romances

[Chorus]
How am I supposed to pretend
I never want to see you again?
How am I supposed to pretend
I never want to see you again?

[Verse 2]
Walk to class in front of ya
Spilled kefir on your keffiyah
You look inside and turn to the door
Drag your feet along the floor

[Pre-Chorus]
Then I see you, you’re walking ‘cross the campus
Cruel professor, studying romances

[Chorus]
How am I supposed to pretend
I never want to see you again?
How am I supposed to pretend
I never want to see you again?

[Bridge]
In the afternoon, you’re out on the stone and grass
And I’m sleeping on the balcony after class
In the afternoon, you’re out on the stone and grass
And I’m sleeping on the balcony after class

[Instrumental]

[Outro]
In the afternoon, you’re out on the stone and grass
And I’m sleeping on the balcony after class
In the afternoon, you’re out on the stone and grass
And I’m sleeping on the balcony after class

I will always be grateful that you introduced this band to our family! Ever since I heard their sound, I immediately understood the appeal. I have vivid memories of my mom and I putting this CD into the car and letting it play on repeat as we drove back and forth from school. This album and this song will always have a special place in my heart. I’m eager to see how they continue to grow creatively as “Father of the Bride” wasn’t my favorite of their works but had some truly standout moments. The Ludwig Goransson produced “My Mistake” has to be my favorite!

I bet to differ, dear. I introduced this band to our family after one of my high school students wanted to write a review of it for the school newspaper. Another was adamantly opposed as she wanted to keep them a secret. My curiosity piqued, I listened and loved it immediately! 😜
