Today I wrap up my look at the 2021 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees, and though I’ve presented the lineup in alphabetical order, I was still able to save the best (or at least the most deserving) for last.
Tina Turner has been a member of the Rock Hall since 1991 as part of Ike & Tina Turner, but she has been eligible for a solo slot since the Hall of Fame began. And while she did have a prolific career alongside her abusive husband, she reached much greater heights on her own. This induction has been a no-brainer for more than 30 years.
Turner becomes just the 29th solo female artist in the Rock Hall, and the third woman to be a two-time inductee. The first was Stevie Nicks, just two years ago, and the second is another 2021 inductee, Carole King.
She has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, and won 12 Grammys. Her best known album is 1984’s Private Dancer, which won four Grammys, including Record and Song of the Year for today’s SOTD.
Turner retired in 2000 after releasing 10 solo albums over 25 years. She has popped up sporadically since in live performances or recorded guest spots. Now 82, the “Queen of Rock & Roll” didn’t attend the Rock Hall ceremony, but she received the night’s biggest ovation after Angela Bassett inducted her.
You must understand though the touch of your hand
Makes my pulse react
That it’s only the thrill of boy meeting girl
Opposites attract
It’s physical
Only logical
You must try to ignore that it means more than that
[Chorus]
What’s love got to do, got to do with it?
What’s love but a second-hand emotion?
What’s love got to do, got to do with it?
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?
[Verse 2]
It may seem to you that I’m acting confused
When you’re close to me
If I tend to look dazed I’ve read it someplace
I’ve got cause to be
There’s a name for it
There’s a phrase that fits
But whatever the reason you do it for me
[Chorus]
Oh
What’s love got to do, got to do with it?
What’s love but a second-hand emotion?
What’s love got to do, got to do with it?
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?
[Bridge]
I’ve been taking on a new direction
But I have to say
I’ve been thinking about my own protection
It scares me to feel this way
[Chorus]
Oh
What’s love got to do, got to do with it?
What’s love but a second-hand emotion?
What’s love got to do, got to do with it?
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?
[Chorus]
What’s love got to do, got to do with it?
What’s love but a sweet old-fashioned notion?
What’s love got to do, got to do with it?
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?
[Chorus]
What’s love got to do ooh , got to do with it?
What’s love but a second-hand emotion?
What’s love got to do, got to do with it?
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?
[Outro]
What’s love?
Got to do it
Got to do it
What’s love?
Completely deserved and long overdue. In fact, I would argue that Ike should never have been inducted in the first place.
Love her! πππ
