Song of the Day #4,896: ‘Everlong’ – Foo Fighters

Over the next two weeks, I’ll feature songs from the latest batch of inductees to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This year’s crop is one of the biggest yet (maybe the biggest ever?), with 12 performers earning inclusion in the Hall.

Kicking things off, alphabetically, are Foo Fighters, who made the cut in their first year of eligibility. The band was founded by Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl in Seattle in 1994, following Kurt Cobain’s suicide and the subsequent disbanding of Nirvana.

Foo Fighters started as a solo project, and Grohl is the only featured artist on the band’s debut album, but he recruited official band members for future releases. The current lineup includes six members, all of whom were inducted into the Hall.

Grohl is one of 26 multiple Hall of Fame inductees, having earned entry with Nirvana in its first year of eligibility as well. He is one of only ten to be in the Hall with two different groups, as opposed to with a group and as a solo artist.

I’ve always liked Grohl as a person, but I’ve never gotten into Foo Fighters as a band. I do enjoy today’s song, probably their best know, but I’m not very familiar with the rest of their output and what I’ve heard skews a little heavy for my taste.

But Grohl is a charming presence on talk shows. He’s generous, thoughtful and funny, the kind of artist I love to see succeed. So I’m very happy to see him and his band receive this honor.

[Verse 1]
Hello, I’ve waited here for you
Everlong
Tonight, I throw myself into
And out of the red
Out of her head, she sang

[Verse 2]
Come down, and waste away with me
Down with me
Slow how you wanted it to be
I’m over my head
Out of her head, she sang

[Pre-Chorus]
And I wonder
When I sing along with you

[Chorus]
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I’ll ever ask of you
You’ve got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

[Verse 3]
Breathe out, so I can breathe you in
Hold you in
And now I know you’ve always been
And out of your head, out of my head I sang

[Pre-Chorus]
And I wonder
When I sing along with you

[Chorus]
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I’ll ever ask of you
You’ve got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

[Instrumental Break with whispering voices]

[Pre-Chorus]
And I wonder

[Chorus]
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I’ll ever ask of you
You’ve got to promise not to stop when I say when

While I don’t know much from the Foo Fighters, I do know this song as well as “My Hero,” which while heavy musically, is very moving lyrically.
