Song of the Day #4,883: ‘Bad Habits’ – Ed Sheeran

Lil Nas X owns the third spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 with ‘Industry Baby,’ his third single to reach #1.

At #4 is an artist with only two #1 hits so far, but nine in the top ten and 43 in the Hot 100. Ed Sheeran’s ‘Bad Habits’ has spent 19 weeks on the chart, peaking at #2 in August but falling just short of joining ‘Shape of You’ and ‘Perfect’ at #1.

I really dig this song, especially when the beat kicks in at the start of the chorus, then kicks in even harder halfway through the chorus. It’s a good blend of his ballad and dance sides.

The track has been compared to The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights,’ and it definitely shares a vibe with that banger. That’s a good thing in my book.

[Verse 1]
Every time you come around, you know I can’t say no
Every time the sun goes down, I let you take control
I can feel the paradise before my world implodes
And tonight had something wonderful

[Chorus]
My bad habits lead to late nights endin’ alone
Conversations with a stranger I barely know
Swearin’ this’ll be the last, but it probably won’t
I got nothin’ left to lose, or use, or do
My bad habits lead to wide eyes starin’ at space
And I know I lose control of the things that I say
Yeah, I was lookin’ for a way out, now I can’t escape
Nothin’ happens after two, it’s truе, it’s true
My bad habits lead to you

[Post-Chorus]
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
My bad habits lead to you
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
My bad habits lеad to you

[Verse 2]
Every pure intention ends when the good times start
Fallin’ over everything to reach the first time’s spark
It started under neon lights and then it all got dark
I only know how to go too far

Nothin’ happens after two, it’s true, it’s true
My bad habits lead to you

[Post-Chorus]
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
My bad habits lead to you
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh

[Bridge]
We took the long way ’round
And burned ’til the fun ran out, now

Nothin’ happens after two, it’s true, it’s true
My bad habits lead to you

[Post-Chorus]
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
My bad habits lead to you
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
My bad habits lead to you

Good song from a solidly good album.

I hear the Weeknd comparison, but it was driving Amy crazy trying to figure out what else the song sounded like. I suggested the chorus was similar to the verses of Pink’s “Get the Party Started” and she agreed. For your comparative consideration:

Cool video. I’m glad Sheeran got over his reluctance to appear in his own music videos. He’s been making the podcast rounds for this new album (which I LOVE), and he’s charming and self-deprecating. Hearing him talk about not being one of the “cool kids” in the music industry was fascinating and a bit sad.
