Song of the Day #4,875: ‘Easy On Me’ – Adele

I haven’t done the math, but on a per-album basis, is there a more successful female artist than Adele? She currently sits at #10 on the all-time sales list for women based on the performance of just three albums. Everybody above her has released at least twice as many.

Even more impressive is that she makes those numbers with seemingly very little effort. She just emerges every 4-5 years after being almost completely out of the spotlight, drops a new song, and watches it break every streaming record in the book.

That was the case with ‘Easy On Me,’ the first single from Adele’s upcoming album, 30. It was teased on October 5 and released just 11 days later, promptly receiving the most streams ever in a single day on Spotify, YouTube and Amazon Music. It also became the most-played song (in a debut week) in radio history.

All that for a rather unremarkable piano ballad. ‘Easy On Me’ doesn’t have the punch of previous lead-off singles ‘Rolling in the Deep’ and ‘Hello.’ It sounds more like a deep cut than the first release from a much-anticipated album.

But what do I know? Clearly Adele did something right. While I suspect she could have released four minutes of heavy breathing and still broken those records, this sad reflection on her recent divorce does seem to have hit a nerve with many listeners.

30 is due out on November 19.

[Verse 1]
There ain’t no gold in this river
That I’ve been washin’ my hands in forever
I know there is hope in these waters
But I can’t bring myself to swim
When I am drowning in this silence
Baby, let me in

[Chorus]
Go easy on me, baby
I was still a child
Didn’t get the chance to
Feel the world around me
I had no time to choose what I chose to do
So go easy on me

[Verse 2]
There ain’t no room for things to change
When we are both so deeply stuck in our ways
You can’t deny how hard I have tried
I changed who I was to put you both first
But now I give up

[Chorus]
Go easy on mе, baby
I was still a child
Didn’t get the chance to
Feel thе world around me
Had no time to choose what I chose to do
So go easy on me

[Bridge]
I had good intentions
And the highest hopes
But I know right now
It probably doesn’t even show

[Chorus]
Go easy on me, baby
I was still a child
I didn’t get the chance to
Feel the world around me
I had no time to choose what I chose to do
So go easy on me

I’m with you. I don’t really get why Adele is as huge as she is but I didn’t get the enormous popularity of other similar artists like Celine Dion and Michael Buble. The common factor, however, seems to be tremendous appeal to mostly adult white women. Perhaps there are simply not enough artists vying for that demographic space?

I read that on Sunday Adele will perform tracks from the new album and older material in a two hour special on CBS at 8:30. Also featuring Oprah Winfrey interviewing her. That is if anyone is interested 😊
