Closing out my three weeks on the albums of 1974 is Barry White’s Can’t Get Enough. This was White’s third album and his only one to top the Billboard 200.
Between 1973 and 1975, White released his first four albums and saw every one top the R&B chart. Six of the 10 albums he released in the 70s did so, and nine of the 10 went Gold or Platinum.
Can’t Get Enough is short and sweet, running just seven songs and 31 minutes. Ten of those minutes are dedicated to ‘I Can’t Believe You Love Me,’ a mostly spoken-word track that closes side one. The opening and closing tracks are short instrumentals.
That leaves just four proper songs, and the album owes its success to the fact that two of them are White’s best-known hits: ‘You’re the First, the Last, My Everything’ and ‘Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe.’ The latter, today’s SOTD, is the only Barry White tune to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
