Another legendary act to release an album in 1974, The Rolling Stones dropped their 12th studio album, It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll. While this album has a relatively low profile in their discography, apart from its title song, it did mark a turning point for the band.
For starters, it was the first Stones album produced by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. After working with producer Jimmy Miller on a stretch of albums widely considered their best, the duo felt they were ready to take the reins. They would produce or co-produce every subsequent Stones release.
This was also their last album to feature guitarist Mick Taylor, who was eventually replaced by Ronnie Wood. Wood was working on a solo album when Jagger and Richards met him. They wound up working on ‘It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (But I Like It),’ which Jagger claimed as the title song of The Stones’ next record.
The album, as its title suggests, is a collection of good old-fashioned rock songs. Initially, the concept was to record one side of new material and one side of classic covers but that idea was scrapped and only one cover (‘Ain’t Too Proud to Beg’) made the final tracklist.
This is a fun listen, but it doesn’t stack up against the band’s best work. Of course, few things do.
If I could stick my pen in my heart
And spill it all over the stage
Would it satisfy you? Would it slide on by you?
Would you think the boy is strange? Ain’t he strange?
If I could win you, if I could sing you
A love song so divine
Would it be enough for your cheating heart
If I broke down and cried? If I cried
[Chorus]
I said, I know it’s only rock and roll, but I like it
I know it’s only rock and roll, but I like it, like it, yes, I do
Oh, well, I like it, I like it, I like it
I said, can’t you see that this old boy has been a-lonely?
[Verse 2]
If I could stick a knife in my heart, suicide right on stage
Would it be enough for your teenage lust
Would it help to ease the pain? Ease your brain
If I could dig down deep in my heart
Feelings would flood on the page
Would it satisfy you? Would it slide on by you?
Would you think the boy’s insane? He is insane
[Chorus]
I said, I know it’s only rock and roll, but I like it
I said, I know it’s only rock and roll, but I like it, like it, yes, I do
Oh, well, I like it, yeah, I like it, I like it
I said, can’t you see that this old boy has been a-lonely
[Bridge]
And do you think that you’re the only girl around?
I bet you think that you’re the only woman in town
[Chorus]
I said, I know it’s only rock and roll, but I like it
I said, I know it’s only rock and roll, but I like it
I know it’s only rock and roll, but I like it, yeah
I know it’s only rock and roll, but I like it, like it, yes, I do
Oh, well, I like it, I like it, I like it, I like it
I like it, I like it
(Only rock and roll, but) I like it
(Only rock and roll, but) I like it
(Only rock and roll, but) Ooh, I like that
(Only rock and roll, but) Ooh yeah, I like it
(Only rock and roll, but) Yeah, I like it
(Only rock and roll, but) Oh yeah, I like it
(Only rock and roll, but) Oh yeah, but I like it
(Only rock and roll, but) Yeah, I like it
(Only rock and roll, but) Oh yeah, but I like it
(Only rock and roll, but) Oh I, I like it
(Only rock and roll, but) Oh yeah, I like it
Yeah, I like it
Oh, I like it
Oh, I like it
Ooh yeah, I like that
I think I like the albums produced by others better than the ones Mick and Keith produced, as I am less a fan of the garage band sound.
