One of my great musical shames is my inability to appreciate Stevie Wonder.
I understand why he’s considered a genius, and one of the most influential and accomplished artists of all time. I hear the intricacy in his melodies and instrumentation, and I marvel that he often played all the instruments himself. I pay my respects to a man who once won three Album of the Year Grammys during a four year span in the mid-70s, a feat nobody else has managed.
I get all that on an intellectual level, but his music just doesn’t move me. I enjoy several of his songs but I never find myself revisiting them.
I have tried. I own and have spent a fair amount of time trying to crack his most celebrated albums: Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillingness’ First Finale, and Songs in the Key of Life. But no dice.
I call this blind spot (excuse the pun) a “shame” because indifference to Stevie Wonder isn’t something a self-respecting music fan should exhibit. But I decided awhile back to reject the idea of guilty pleasures, or their flip side, guilty displeasures.
I like what I like. It’s silly to apologize for it.
La-lala-la-la, la-lala-la
La-lala-la-la, la-lala-la
La-lala-la-la, la-lala-la
La-lala-la-la, la-lala-la
[Verse 1]
For you, there might a brighter star
But through my eyes the light of you, is all I see
For you, there might be another song
But all my heart can hear is your melody
[Hook]
So long ago my heart without demanding
Informed me that no other love could do
But listen did I not though understanding
Fell in love with one, who would break my heart in two
[Verse 2]
For you, love might bring a toast of wine
But which each sparkle know the best for you I pray
For you, love might be for you to find
But I will celebrate our love of yesterday
[Hook]
So long ago my heart without demanding
Informed me that no other love could do
But listen did I not though understanding
Fell in love with one, who would break my heart in two
[Verse 1]
For you, there might be another star
But through my eyes the light of you, it’s all I see
For you, there might be another song
But in my heart your melody will stay with me
I love a number of Stevie Wonder songs, but others, even on his most celebrated albums, just tend to go on too long or otherwise don’t grab me. And then there is “I Just Called to Say I Love You.” Don’t even get me started on how much I hate that drivel!
I named my first hamster Wonder in honor of Stevie Wonder. I’m distraught that you can’t appreciate him as my 7 year old self did.
