‘The Wrong Girl’ sits right in the middle of Belle and Sebastian’s 2000 album, Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant, an unassuming little pop gem surrounded by more ambitious material.
This song has everything you want from a Belle and Sebastian tune: jaunty acoustic guitar, strings, a trumpet solo, lyrics about a lovelorn loser. It also lets band member Stevie Jackson take over for Stuart Murdoch on vocals, which he does a couple of times per album with great results.
It’s been six years since the last proper Belle and Sebastian album, 2015’s Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance. The band revisited some older material for the soundtrack of the 2019 film Days of the Bagnold Summer, but they’re overdue for a new release.

Well, until the next album, you are doing your share to keep the Belle & Sebastian fan club alive.
While I’ve never owned an album, I’ve always enjoyed the songs you placed on playlists for me way back when. There’s something a bit .. flat… that I’m hearing in this song. Not sure if that’s the right word, but something feels off between the voice and jaunty trumpet parts.
