Song of the Day #4,594: ‘Skin’ – Sabrina Carpenter

A few week’s after Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘drivers license’ was released, becoming an international hit and shining a spotlight on the love affair between Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter, Carpenter released her own song, ‘Skin.’

Several lyrics in this track suggest it’s a direct response to ‘drivers license.’ “Maybe you didn’t mean it, maybe ‘blonde’ was the only rhyme,” Carpenter sings, recalling this line from Rodrigo’s song: “And you’re probably with that blonde girl who always made me doubt.”

Carpenter advises her rival not to “drive” herself insane and suggests there’s more than one side to this story, declaring “you’re tellin’ it how you see it like truth is whatever you decide.”

While the song seems like a pretty obvious response to ‘drivers license,’ the timing has some fans suspecting shenanigans. Could Carpenter really have written, recorded and released this single in just a couple of weeks, with no advance notice of Rodrigo’s tune?

And then there’s Bassett, who released a seemingly related song of his own, titled ‘Lie Lie Lie,’ right between the other two. Could all three of these songs be part of an elaborate marketing scheme? If so, it’s worked beautifully.

Conspiracies about promotional tie-ins aside, I think when the dust settles it will be Rodrigo’s ‘drivers license’ that remains standing. Its massive success is due to the strong songcraft and Rodrigo’s emotional performance. Those qualities will remain long after everybody forgets about the love triangle that inspired it.

[Verse 1]
Maybe we could’ve been friends
If I met you in another life
Maybe then we could pretend
There’s no gravity in the words we write
Maybe you didn’t mean it
Maybe “blonde” was the only rhyme
The only rhyme

[Pre-Chorus]
Want my heart to be breakin’, breakin’, no
I’m happy and you hate it, hate it, oh
And I’m not asking you to let it go
But you been tellin’ your side
So I’ll be tellin’ mine, oh

[Chorus]
You can try
To get under my, under my, under my skin
While hе’s on mine
Yeah, all on my, all on my, all on my skin
I wish you knew that еven you
Can’t get under my skin if I don’t let you in

[Verse 2]
You’re tellin’ it how you see it
Like truth is whatever you decide
Some people will believe it
And some will read in between the lines
You’re putting me in the spotlight
But I’ve been under it all my life
Said all my life

[Pre-Chorus]
Want my heart to be breakin’, breakin’, no
I’m happy and you hate it, hate it, oh
And I’m not asking you to let it go
But you been tellin’ your side
So I’ll be tellin’ mine (Mine, oh)

[Chorus]
You can try
To get under my, under my, under my skin
While he’s on mine
Yeah, all on my, all on my, all on my skin
I wish you knew that even you
Can’t get under my skin if I don’t let you in, oh
You can try
To get under my, under my, under my skin
While he’s on mine
Yeah, all on my, all on my, all on my skin
I wish you knew that even you
Can’t get under my skin if I don’t let you in, oh

[Bridge]
I just hope that one day
We both can laugh about it
When it’s not in our face
Won’t have to dance around it
Don’t drive yourself insane
It won’t always be this way

[Chorus]
You can try
To get under my, under my, under my skin
While he’s on mine
Yeah, all on my, all on my, all on my skin
I wish you knew that even you
Can’t get under my skin if I don’t let you in

All I know is that Sabrina’s PR team did her dirty if this was all plotted out lol

Seems like this Sabrina is taking a page out of the Ariana Grande playbook both style and content-wise.
