One of the many downsides of COVID-19 is that it blew up my vacation plans. My family had planned a two-week trip to Hawaii that has been postponed to (I hope) next summer.
I know, a quarter million people are dead and the virus is entering its worst phase yet, so I’m not complaining! I’m extremely lucky (knock on wood) that altered plans and a brief work furlough are my biggest losses to this global scourge.
My family vacations typically coincide with a week or two where I pause my daily Song of the Day write-ups and offer up songs without comment. Didn’t do that this summer, either.
I’m going to use this holiday week as a chance to take that break from blogging for a few days. I will treat my audience to a handful of live performances by the great Miley Cyrus, who has a true talent for covering songs released before she was born.
I started down this path after the viral release of Cyrus’ performance of Blondie’s ‘Heart of Glass’ at the (virtual) iHeart Festival in late September, where she turned the New Wave hit into a fist-pumping rock song.
Cyrus has a love of the classics and a voice full of character and rasp that more than does them justice. This week I’ll post a handful of those performances.
Despite Covid, our family still managed to have some nice travel experiences – to New Mexico just as Covid was beginning in the US, then to Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska in June when those states showed less spread than Florida or California. We also improvised a lovely celebration of my in-laws’ birthdays with our expanded bubble AirBnB experience in Fort Myers. We may even pull off one more vacation in December.at a tropical resort either somewhere in Florida or the Caribbean.
Anyway, you certainly deserve your vacation break from blogging, and featuring Miley covers is a great idea. She really has the chops to nail any cover she chooses.
Enjoy your break!
