Song of the Day #4,410: ‘Dance Dance’ – Lucia Zambetti

Here’s another Gen Z artist whom Sophia discovered via social media. Lucia Zambetti, just 16 years old, is “famous” on Instagram and TikTok but really nowhere else.

Modern technology has made it possible not just for teenagers to record and release their own music, but for other teens to easily find it. When I was Sophia’s age, the musical artists I listened to were all much older than me.

I guess you had boy bands such as New Kids on the Block, but those were packaged acts, not singer-songwriters, and definitely not something I was into.

I think it’s great that my daughters can see girls their own age writing and performing music for and about young women, often without the influence of a record label. Sure, social media platforms come with their own layer of artifice, but it’s a lot closer to a direct connection between artist and fan.

[Verse 1]
My baby said he loved me before he left a month ago
He said he’d be a rockstar and he’d play me like a show
He didn’t even look back, now I can’t hear the notes
But now I’m dancing slowly and I’m dancing on my own

[Chorus]
Dance, dance baby, dance like no one’s watching you
‘Cause he’ll leave in the morning, leave in the afternoon
No time left for tears, the music’s way too loud
‘Cause you’ll just be another girl in his crowd

[Verse 2]
My baby’s got a new girl and she laughs at everything
While he’s playing on his tour she’s a roadie on the wing
He’s at the afterparty and she knows that he’s the king
He’s all over pretty girls, so she knew she means nothing

[Chorus]
Dance, dance baby, dance like no one’s watching you
‘Cause he’ll leave in the morning, leave in the afternoon
No time left for tears, the music’s way too loud
‘Cause you’ll just be another girl in his crowd

[Bridge]
Watching broken-down is a sad sight to see
He’s done this to you and her, and he’s done this to me
There’s nothing else to do
But not let it get to you

[Chorus]
Dance, dance baby, dance like no one’s watching you
‘Cause he’ll leave in the morning, leave in the afternoon
No time left for tears, the music’s way too loud
‘Cause you’ll just be another girl in his crowd

‘Cause you’ll just be another girl in his crowd

There were a fair amount of young artists when we too were younger, but I think we were generally “old souls” in terms of our musical taste. We favored a number of artists from the 60’s and 70’s, especially as they continued releasing music into the 80’s and 90’s. The YouTube and TikTok of our day were MTV and radio, but we (especially you) did not spend a great deal of time looking for new music through those formats. For as long as I can remember, you’re go to way of discovering new artists has mostly been through articles and reviews in magazines.

I hit “post comment” too soon before I could undo an autocorrect on “your,” but also to add that your point is also well taken as to how the floodgates have been opened substantially by the ability to self-record and publish without the gatekeepers of studios and program directors.
