1993 saw the release of Kate Bush’s seventh studio album, The Red Shoes. This was her follow-up to her two most successful releases, Hounds of Love and The Sensual World, and it joined those albums in reaching Platinum status in the UK.
This would be Bush’s last album for 12 years, a hiatus she spent raising her son.
Bush was a consistent hitmaker in her native England, but didn’t find as much success in the U.S. My knowledge of her work is restricted to Hounds of Love and her work with Peter Gabriel.
The Red Shoes featured contributions by Prince, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, among others. Bush released a short film to promote the record, landing Miranda Richardson as a co-star. She had quite a rolodex.
I generally feel that a little of Kate Bush goes a long way, and this album fits the bill. It’s an enjoyable enough listen but it doesn’t have me reaching for the repeat button.
See those trees
Bend in the wind
I feel they’ve got a lot more sense than me
You see I try to resist
[Chorus]
A rubberband bouncing back to life
A rubberband bend the beat
If I could learn to give like a rubberband
I’d be back on my feet
A rubberband hold me trousers up
A rubberband ponytails
If I could learn to twang like a rubberband
I’d be a rubberband girl
[Post-Chorus]
A rubberband girl, me
A rubberband girl, me
Oh, I wanna be a rubberband girl
A rubberband girl, she
[Verse 2]
When I slip out
Of my catapult
I gotta land with my feet firm on the ground
And let my body catch up
[Chorus]
A rubberband bouncing back to life
A rubberband bend the beat
If I could learn to give like a rubberband
I’d be back on my feet
A rubberband hold your trousers up
A rubberband ponytails
If I could learn to twang like a rubberband
I’d be a rubberband girl
[Post-Chorus]
A rubberband girl, me
A rubberband girl, me
Oh, I wanna be a rubberband girl
A rubberband girl, she
[Bridge]
Give like a rubberband
Twang like a rubberband
Snap like a rubberband
[Interlude]
Rub-a-dub-a-dub-a-dub
Rub-a-dub-a-dub
Rub-a-dub
[Hook]
One rubberband won’t keep you up
Two rubberbands won’t keep you up
Three rubberbands won’t keep you up
[Interlude]
A rubberband girl, she
A rubberband girl, she
[Interlude]
[Interlude]
Here I go!
A rubberband girl, she
A rubberband girl, she
Yeah!
A rubberband girl, she
[Hook]
One rubberband won’t keep you up
Two rubberbands won’t keep you up
Three rubberbands won’t keep you up
[Outro]
A rubberband girl, she
A rubberband girl, she
A rubberband girl, she
A rubberband girl, she
I’ve had limited exposure to Kate Bush as well, and share your feeling that a tittle of her goes a long way.
