Song of the Day #4,332: ‘Paradisin” – Rina Sawayama

I had never heard of Rina Sawayama before April 17, when I saw a slew of tweets celebrating the release of her debut studio album, Sawayama. The Japanese-born, London-raised, singer-songwriter and model has been releasing singles since 2013, racking up critical accolades and assembling a growing and fervent fan base.

One listen to Sawayama and it’s clear why she deserves to be a big deal. This album is bursting with creativity, hopscotching between genres and giving vibrant voice to Sawayama’s unique worldview.

Who else could offer up the “Japanese arcade game” vibe of today’s track, the bubblegum thrash metal of ‘STFU!,’ the Asian Kate Bush vibes of ‘Akasaka Sad,’ and the earnest balladry of ‘Chosen Family,’ a tribute to her LGBT fans?

This isn’t an album I see myself returning to often — it’s a lot to take in all at once — but I’m always excited to discover a talent like Sawayama.

[Intro]
Paradisin’
Livin’ my best life thrivin’
Drivin’ you cra-a-a-a-azy
Paradisin’
Livin’ my best life thrivin’
You say I’m misbehavin’
But I’m just a kid, so save it
Let me have an unforgettable time of my life

[Verse 1]
I went and messed up again
Went against everything you said
Summer of drinking in Trafalgar Square, yeah, yeah
Then you threaten to send me to
Boarding school for the seventh time
I know we can’t afford that, so I’m fine

[Pre-Chorus 1]
Though I’m stuck in the middle of it all
Isn’t life so, life so beautiful?

[Chorus]
Paradisin’
Livin’ my best life thrivin’
Drivin’ you cra-a-a-a-azy
Paradisin’
Livin’ my best life thrivin’
You say I’m misbehavin’
But I’m just a kid, so save it
Let me have an unforgettable time of my life

[Verse 2]
First kiss in 2003
Making out, feeling carefree
But then his phone rings
And your number’s on the screen (Oh, fuck)
Hacked my MSN messenger
Blackmailed my best friend, telling her
“Rina、あんた、ふざけんじゃないよ。私は—”
Mum, I’m fine

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Yeah, I bet you think I’m terrible
But you don’t know nothing, not at all

[Chorus]
Paradisin’
Living my best life thriving
Drivin’ you cra-a-a-a-azy
Paradisin’
Living my best life thriving
You say I’m misbehavin’
But I’m just a kid, so save it
Let me have an unforgettable time of my life

[Chorus]
Paradisin’
Living my best life thriving
Drivin’ you cra-a-a-a-azy
Paradisin’
Living my best life thriving
You say I’m misbehavin’
But I’m just a kid, so save it
Let me have an unforgettable time of my life
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la

I’ve never heard of her, but if she is truly on the rise, I guess I will be hearing more in the future.
