Song of the Day #4,318: ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ – Bill Withers

Legendary soul singer-songwriter Bill Withers didn’t die from coronavirus, but his passing on March 30, at 81 years old, happened right when the new pandemic reality was setting in. Would all the news be sad now?

Withers was responsible for such soul-balming classics as ‘Ain’t No Sunshine,’ ‘Lean On Me,’ ‘Just the Two of Us’ and ‘Lovely Day.’ He won multiple Grammys and was inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

His career lasted a mere 15 years, from the 1971 release of his debut Just As I Am to 1985’s Watching You Watching Me. After that, he just walked away from the industry. Apart from a couple of guest appearances here and there, he never recorded or performed live again.

In a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone, he said “These days I wouldn’t know a pop chart from a Pop-Tart.”

Though his career was short-lived, his impact was immense. Those classic songs live on in both his original versions and countless covers (I’m partial to my nephew Daniel’s rendition of today’s SOTD).

[Verse 1]
Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone
It’s not warm when she’s away
Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone
And she’s always gone too long anytime she goes away

[Verse 2]
Wonder this time where she’s gone
Wonder if she’s gone to stay
Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone
And this house just ain’t no home anytime she goes away

[Verse 3]
And I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know
Hey, I ought to leave the young thing alone
But ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone

[Verse 4]
Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone
Only darkness every day
Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone
And this house just ain’t no home anytime she goes away

[Outro]
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away

I’m partial to Daniel’s version of this song as well. 😀

I don’t know much else from Withers beyond the songs you mentioned, but what great songs they are! Perhaps a deep dive into the rest of his discography is in order.

I am partial to Daniel’s version too. As a matter of fact I requested him to sing this I believe on the day Bill Withers died 😢
