Song of the Day #4,269: ‘I Know Places’ – Taylor Swift

Continuing my ranking of Taylor Swift’s albums…

#2 – 1989 – 2014

If Taylor Swift heavily flirted with pop music on 2012’s Red, she climbed into bed with it on 2014’s 1989. And the result was her most electrifying album to date.

This album felt like a strange detour at the time, but in retrospect I think it was a giant leap toward a sound Swift had in her all along. Though 1989 trails Fearless in overall sales, it’s the album on which she truly emerged as a global superstar.

Eleven of 1989‘s 13 tracks made my final cut, with only the cheesy opening track ‘Welcome to New York’ and goofy first single ‘Shake It Off’ missing out. And on a good day, I’d throw ‘Shake It Off’ in there as well.

‘Blank Space’ and ‘Style’ number among Swift’s best songs ever, and everything else here is good, great or excellent. I particularly love today’s SOTD, ‘I Know Places,’ and its kickass chorus.

Working with a team of producers including Max Martin, Shellback, Jack Antonoff and Ryan Tedder, Swift gives the whole album a consistent synth-pop sheen that simultaneously feels like a throwback to the late 80s and something altogether new.

This album would be the pinnacle of many artists’ careers, demonstrating a mastery of both songwriting and recording artistry, but Swift has already managed to top it. We’ll get to that one tomorrow.

[Verse 1]
You stand with your hand on my waistline
It’s a scene and we’re out here in plain sight
I can hear them whisper as we pass by
It’s a bad sign, bad sign
Something happens when everybody finds out
See the vultures circling, dark clouds
Love’s a fragile little flame, it could burn out
It could burn out

[Pre-Chorus 1]
‘Cause they got the cages, they got the boxes and guns
They are the hunters, we are the foxes and we run

[Chorus]
Baby, I know places we won’t be found
And they’ll be chasing their tails trying to track us down
‘Cause I, I know places we can hide
I know places, I know places

[Verse 2]
Lights flash and we’ll run for the fences
Let them say what they want, we won’t hear it
Loose lips sink ships all the damn time
Not this time

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Just grab my hand and don’t ever drop it, my love
They are the hunters, we are the foxes, and we run

[Chorus]
Baby, I know places we won’t be found
And they’ll be chasing their tails trying to track us down
‘Cause I, I know places we can hide
I know places

[Bridge]
They are the hunters, we are the foxes, and we run
Just grab my hand and don’t ever drop it, my love

[Chorus]
Baby, I know places we won’t be found
And they’ll be chasing their tails trying to track us down
‘Cause I, I know places we can hide
I know places

[Outro]
They take their shots, but we’re bulletproof (I know places)
And you know for me, it’s always you (I know places)
In the dead of night, your eyes so green (I know places)
And I know for you, it’s always me (I know places)

The only surprise here is that this album doesn’t top your list, as I know how much you like it. Because I’m less of a fan of Swift’s 80’s pop sound, this album would certainly rank lower for me.

I’m so glad you featured “I Know Places” which is probably my favorite song off this album. I haven’t gone through yet to try your ranking method myself, but I suspect I would have this album a little bit lower. Still, I agree with everything you’ve said here and this is a consistently wonderful record.

Side note: this is a great Vance Joy cover of this song from his time as Taylor’s opener for this album’s tour. https://youtu.be/w-39b_MiZn8

As I’ve been listening to Red, Fearless, Reputation, and Lover over the past week, I’ve decided I’d rather rank her “albums”/body of work based on the relationship that inspired them. This would be particularly helpful on Reputation, as I adore the songs inspired by Joe Alwyn, while those by Calvin Harris not so much. Thus far, in my purely casual consideration, my rankings would be something like this:
    1. Jake Gyllenhaal
    2. Andrea Swift
    3. Joe Alwyn
    4. Patrick Kennedy
    5. Tom Hiddleston
    6. The press
    7. Her various girlfriends
    8. Joe Jonas
    9. Harry Styles
    10. Assorted ex boyfriends (including Calvin Harris)
