Song of the Day #4,239: ‘Listen to the Music’ – The Doobie Brothers

It should come as no surprise that The Doobie Brothers are first-ballot Hall of Famers, inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame the first year they were nominated.

The surprise is that the nomination came 23 years after they were first eligible. Since 1997, the board of the Rock Hall has failed to include the California rockers on the ballot. Outrageous!

It’s a couple of decades late, but one of the Hall’s most notorious omissions has been remedied.

Over their 50 year career, the Doobies evolved from a folk rock band under the leadership of Ton Johnston to more of a blue-eyed soul outfit with the addition of Michael McDonald, who replaced Johnston as lead vocalist and songwriter. That switch happened very early in their career, though the band’s best-loved songs are split pretty evenly between the two eras.

I downloaded a Doobie Brothers greatest hits collection a couple of years back and was surprised by how many classic tunes I never realized were by the band. There’s no question they belong in the Hall of Fame, and I’m glad that oversight has finally been corrected.

[Verse 1]
Don’t you feel it growing, day by day
People getting ready for the news
Some are happy, some are sad
Woah, gotta let the music play

What the people need is a way to make them smile
Ain’t so hard to do if you know how
Gotta get a message, get it on through
Oh now momma don’t you ask me why

[Chorus]
Oh, oh, oh listen to the music
Oh, oh, oh listen to the music
Oh, oh, oh listen to the music
All the time

{Bridge}

[Verse 2]
When, when I know you know baby, everything I say
Meet me in the country for a day
We’ll be happy and we’ll dance
Oh, we’re gonna dance our blues away

And if I’m feeling good to you and you’re feeling good to me
There ain’t nothing we can’t do or say
Feeling good, feeling fine
Oh, baby, let the music play

[Chorus]
Oh, oh, oh listen to the music
Oh, oh, oh listen to the music
Oh, oh, oh listen to the music
All the time

[Bridge]
Like a lazy flowing river
Surrounding castles in the sky
And the crowd is growing bigger
Listening for the happy sounds
And I got to let them fly

[Chorus]
Oh, oh, oh listen to the music
Oh, oh, oh listen to the music
Oh, oh, oh listen to the music
All the time

I’m not sure why it took 23 years, but I’m glad they are in the Rock Hall now. It’s hard to imagine a more classic rock band.
