Song of the Day #4,205: ‘Grip’ – Tessa Thompson

Best Movies of the 2010s
#18 – Creed (2015)

Technically, Creed is the seventh Rocky film, though what a stroke of genius it was to pass the torch to the next generation by making the protagonist the young, black son of Rocky Balboa’s longtime friend and onetime nemesis, Apollo Creed.

The other genius move was hiring Ryan Coogler as co-writer/director, fresh off the success of his indie drama Fruitvale Station. That ensured Creed would be not just an underdog sports drama (satisfying as those are), but a true character study. A lot like the original Rocky.

In Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson, Coogler found a central couple every bit as charismatic and lovable as Rocky and Adrian. Their romantic sparring is as suspenseful and satisfying as the boxing.

He also captured the most tender and moving performance Sylvester Stallone has ever given.

Coogler delivers several breathtaking set pieces, including a single take boxing match, a training montage that turns street ATVs into a rugged ballet, and a climactic fight scene that features one of the all-time great music cues.

Creed is a fist-pumping sports movie, a sweet and sexy romance, and a drama about a man fighting against his own mortality. It’s rare that a popular entertainment works this well on so many levels.

Grip
Grip
Grip
Me

I might give a little
But you can take it all
I might try to run
But just to make you follow

I like it when you
Grip, grip, grip
(I like it when you)
Grip, grip, me

Got you right where I want
I can see it all
Don’t hold back, keep coming
No, I don’t wanna stop

I like it when you
Grip, grip, grip
(I like it when you)
Grip, grip, me

Don’t let me go, let me go
Take me to the floor, to the floor
I need more, I need more
You know I like it when you

Grip, grip, grip
(I like it when you)
Grip, grip, me
(I like it when you)

Although I wasn’t motivated to see the sequel I really liked this movie especially Stallone’s performance and of course Tessa’s as well 😊

  3. Amy says:

So happy to see this film made your decade best list. It would surely be on mine, though probably at least a few notches higher. What a revelation Cooper’s direction was. Made everything about the characters feel simultaneously familiar and brand new.
