Song of the Day #4,172: ‘Love U Forever’ – Jenny Lewis

Best Albums of the 2010s – #16
The Voyager – Jenny Lewis (2014)

Whether it’s because my own tastes have shifted, or because the cultural landscape has become more inclusive, my list of favorite 2010s albums is dominated by women. Thirteen of the top 20 and seven of the top 10 titles are by female artists.

Jenny Lewis emerged as a favorite in this decade, after being on my radar tangentially in the prior one. The sound and perspective of her 2014 album The Voyager feel completely fresh, even as the record hearkens back to folk rock and pop sounds of the 70s.

I named the track ‘Late Bloomer’ from this album as my favorite song of 2014, calling the music and production “rich as custard” and praising Lewis’ gorgeous vocals. I was right then and I feel the same way now.

Lewis recorded a follow-up album, On the Line, this year that hits many of the same high notes as The Voyager. It won’t make this list because of my “one title per artist” rule, but it’s worthy of a mention.

[Verse 1]
When I met you, you were just a boy
And you were tongue-tied and wearing corduroy
When you kissed me, I was so annoyed
‘Cause I was already gone

[Pre-Chorus]
Call up your girlfriends, let’s go out tonight
We’re gonna drink ourselves some burgundy wine
Talk all about how we’ve saved the date
I can’t believe I’m getting married in May

[Chorus]
I could love you forever
I could love you forever
I could love you forever
I could love you till all the Polaroids fade

[Verse 2]
We were kids then – in the Daisy Age
And we wore peace signs as the riots blazed
When we candy-flipped, we’d stay out too late
‘Cause we were already gone

[Pre-Chorus]
Call up your girlfriends, let’s go out tonight
I want to reminisce and get a little high
Talk all about how we’ve saved the date
I can’t believe I’m getting married in May

[Chorus]
I could love you forever
I could love you forever
I could love you forever
I could love you till all our hair turns gray

[Bridge]
Now we are living in Ladonia Estates
And we eat out every night and drink every day
But there are some things money cannot say
Like the feeling of hell in a hallway

[Chorus]
I could love you forever
I could love you forever
I could love you forever
I could love you forever

I could love you forever
I could love you forever
I could love you forever

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I think your musical taste has shifted more than the cultural landscape.

I disagree, I’m sure Clay is picking up more of the changes and appreciating them on this blog because of his specific music taste, but there’s no doubt that women are making huge waves in the cultural landscape of the music industry. It makes total sense to have a list as even/skewed toward female artists as this one will be.

Also, this song is a bop and this album is great. 🙂

I don’t know this album! This song sounds pretty cool though. Definitely some Haim vibes which is always a good thing. I feel that this list is going to be bring me to listen to the albums that I’ve slept on for far too long, so I thank you for that!
