Song of the Day #4,154: ‘Someone You Loved’ – Lewis Capaldi

Wow, is time flying. It feels like summer hasn’t ended yet and we’re already two thirds into November. Very soon I need to start thinking about my “best of the year” albums and movies.

But 2019 is the least of it. I’ve been working on my “best of the 2010s” lists and will likely roll those out in December. So these next two weeks will be the calm before the “best of” storm. And what better way to breeze through two weeks than with an installment of ‘What the Kids are Listening To,’ in which I feature the ten songs topping this week’s Billboard Hot 100?

I haven’t done one of these in awhile, so we have a fresh batch of songs to get through. I’m always excited, if a little afraid, to hear what tracks are dominating the radio and streaming platforms. Let’s dive in.

At #1 is a song called ‘Someone You Loved’ by an artist named Lewis Capaldi. Right out of the gate, I’m completely in the dark. Is this a pop song? Rap? A tear-jerking ballad? And who is this Lewis Capaldi fellow, whose name is entirely unfamiliar to me even as he sits atop this chart?

Turns out Capaldi is a Scottish singer-songwriter, and the first solo act from his country to score a Billboard #1 since Sheena Easton 38 years ago.

The song is indeed a tear-jerking ballad, a piano ballad no less, and not at all what I expected to hear at #1 in 2019.

[Verse 1]
I’m going under, and this time, I fear there’s no one to save me
This all or nothing really got a way of driving me crazy
I need somebody to heal, somebody to know
Somebody to have, somebody to hold
It’s easy to say, but it’s never the same
I guess I kinda liked the way you numbed all the pain

[Chorus]
Now the day bleeds into nightfall
And you’re not here to get me through it all
I let my guard down and then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved

[Verse 2]
I’m going under, and this time, I fear there’s no one to turn to
This all or nothing way of loving got me sleeping without you
Now, I need somebody to know, somebody to hear
Somebody to have, just to know how it feels
It’s easy to say, but it’s never the same
I guess I kinda like the way you help me escape

[Chorus]
Now the day bleeds into nightfall
And you’re not here to get me through it all
I let my guard down and then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved

[Bridge]
And I tend to close my eyes when it hurts sometimes
I fall into your arms
I’ll be safe in your sound till I come back around

[Chorus]
For now, the day bleeds into nightfall
And you’re not here to get me through it all
I let my guard down and then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved
But now the day bleeds into nightfall
And you’re not here to get me through it all
I let my guard down and then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved
I let my guard down and then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I was wondering when you were going to feature the top hits again. I used to have more familiarity with the top 40, or at least the top 10, when our kids were younger and we would sometimes play the hits station on the radio. Nowadays, however, I’m really out of the loop, so I need this installment more than ever.

Lewis Capaldi? I’ve never heard of him either! Good song though.
