Song of the Day #4,144: ‘Bluebird’ – Miranda Lambert

Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the headliner of tomorrow night’s Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars concert — Ms. Miranda Lambert!

I’ve been playing Lambert’s entire catalog on random the past couple of weeks in preparation for the show — seven solo albums plus three with Pistol Annies — and somewhere along the way it hit me: Miranda Lambert is my favorite musical artist. At this point in my life, nobody out there give me more consistent listening pleasure.

Lambert is equally adept at tender ballads and ripsnorting rockers. She takes chances thematically, lyrically and musically that always pay off. She is a superb singer and instrumentalist, and partners with some of the industry’s finest musicians to always deliver great-sounding work.

She is incredibly consistent. Over those ten albums, she has yet to release a song I want to skip. My list of her very best songs takes up more than a third of her catalog.

And she has done all of this while working within the confines of the country music genre, but pushing at the edges just enough to establish herself as one of country’s greatest ever artists.

Hers has been a truly remarkable career, and the crazy part is that she’s just 35 years old. I can only imagine how many more great albums and songs will she deliver over the next 25+ years. I just know I’ll be waiting eagerly for every one of them.

Here’s a song from her latest album, Wildcard. Can’t wait to hear it live tomorrow night!

[Verse 1]
Yeah,  I’m a turner
I turn pages all the time
Don’t like where I’m at
34  was bad, so I just turn to 35
Yeah,  I’m a keeper
I keep digging down for the deep
Like  the records I’m playing
They might keep you waiting
But you know I’m only playing for keeps

[Chorus]
And if the house just keeps on winning
I  got a wildcard up my sleeve
And if love keeps giving me lemons
I’ll just mix ’em in my drink
And if the whole wide world stops singing
And all the stars go dark
I’ll keep the light on in my soul
Keep a bluebird in my heart

[Verse 2]
Well, I’m a giver
Yeah, and I’m still giving ’em hell
Forgiving’s pretty hard
So I made an art out of forgettin’ ’em well
Yeah, I’m a rhymer
I can turn 20 cents into a 10
And if I get confused and I start to lose
I rhyme a dime ’til it all makes sense

[Chorus]
And if the house just keeps on winning
I got a wildcard up my sleeve
And if love keeps giving me lemons
I’ll just mix ’em in my drink
And if the whole wide world stops singing
And all the stars go dark
I turn a light on in my soul
And keep a bluebird in my heart

[Bridge]
Ooh
Ooh

[Chorus]
And if the house just keeps on winning
I got a wildcard up my sleeve
And if love starts giving me lemons
Just mix ’em in my drink
And if the whole wide world stops singing
And all the stars go dark
I’ll keep a light on in my soul
Keep a bluebird in my heart
I’ll keep a light on in my soul
Keep a bluebird in my heart
Keep a bluebird in my heart

[Outro]
Ooh
And the bluebird sings
Ooh
