Song of the Day #4,023: ‘Mother’s Daughter’ – Miley Cyrus

I don’t know if Miley Cyrus’ collaboration with Mark Ronson will appear on her upcoming album, but the latest sneak peek at that release (in the form of an EP titled SHE IS COMING) suggests it will be worth listening to regardless.

SHE IS COMING is the first in a series of three planned EPs leading up to the album release. The next will be SHE IS HERE, followed by SHE IS EVERYTHING, all leading up to the album, titled SHE IS MILEY CYRUS. This is a similar release strategy to the one John Mayer used for his album The Search for Everything, when he dropped the album’s first eight songs over two EPs before releasing the full album.

As an album guy, I’m not sure how I feel about this practice. I generally prefer to hear all of an artist’s new material at once and in context of the rest of the album tracks.

At the same time, it is nice to have a steady stream of new songs to appreciate, and if it’s not one of my favorite artists, I’m fine with it. I wouldn’t want to hear a new Ben Folds, Aimee Mann or Elvis Costello album that way. But Miley? Why not?

The lead-off track from the SHE IS COMING EP, and presumably the album, is ‘Mother’s Daughter,’ a straight-up banger. I love the sound, the performance and the attitude of this song. It’s one of my favorite releases of the year so far.

[Verse 1]
Hallelujah, I’m a freak, I’m a freak, hallelujah
Every day of the week, I’ma do ya like I want ya
I’m a Nile crocodile, a piranha

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh my God, she got the power
Oh, look at her, she got the power
So, so, so

[Chorus]
Don’t fuck with my freedom
I came up to get me some
I’m nasty, I’m evil
Must be something in the water or that I’m my mother’s daughter
Don’t fuck with my freedom
I came up to get me some
I’m nasty, I’m evil
Must be something in the water or that I’m my mother’s daughter

[Post-Chorus]
So, back up, back up, back up, back up, boy, ooh
Back up, back up, back up, back up, boy, ooh

[Verse 2]
Hallelujah, I’m a witch, I’m a witch, hallelujah
Swish swish, I’m a three-point shooter, I blow through ya
Like a hot wind out in the bayou, ya

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh my God, she got the power
Well, look at her, she got the power

[Chorus]
Don’t fuck with my freedom
I came up to get me some
I’m nasty, I’m evil
Must be something in the water or that I’m my mother’s daughter
Don’t fuck with my freedom
I came up to get me some
I’m nasty, I’m evil
Must be something in the water or that I’m my mother’s daughter

[Post-Chorus]
So, back up, back up, back up, back up, boy, ooh
Back up, back up, back up, back up, boy, ooh
Back up, back up, back up, back up, boy, ooh
Back up, back up, back up, back up, boy, ooh

[Bridge]
My mama always told me that I’d make it
That I’d make it, so I made it
I put my back into and my heart in it
So I did it, yeah, I did it
My mama always told me that I’d make it
That I’d make it, so I made it
I put my back into and my heart in it
So I did it, yeah, I did it

[Chorus]
Don’t fuck with my freedom
I came up to get me some
I’m nasty, I’m evil
Must be something in the water or that I’m my mother’s daughter

Miley is the real deal. I expect her album will be quite good when it is finally released in its entirety.

As for the EP release strategy, it’s not really all that different than the traditional model of releasing a single or two or even three ahead of the album release. It seems to be taking a page from video streaming networks like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. For example, Hulu began the new season of Handmaid’s Tale by releasing the first three episodes of the new season – a mini binge watch, followed by an episode a week. In the end, there will be a whole season, just as there will be a whole album from Miley.

That’s an interesting analogy… looking at an album as a TV season made up of a number of episodes (songs). I’ve always looked at albums more like movies, with the songs representing scenes or sequences.
