Song of the Day #4,003: ‘Dancing Queen’ – ABBA

My daughter Sophia turns 17 today, an age that doesn’t have the meaning of 16 or 18 but feels relatively momentous in its own right.

In fact, when I searched for songs about (or at least mentioning) being 17, I found a treasure trove. Something about the age appeals to songwriters… probably the idea of being fully immersed in teenagerdom but just on the brink of adulthood.

I listened to quite a few of those songs and found many of them to be on the sad side, either looking back wistfully at lost youth or painting adolescence as a harrowing and confusing time. Others were a little too suggestive (“Well she was just 17, you know what I mean, and the way she looked was way beyond compare”).

So I decided to go with one of the most buoyant songs ever recorded, a celebration of youthful energy: ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen.’

This is also a good fit because Sophia is a big fan of the Mamma Mia movies (I’m right there with her on the sequel) and our family is embarking on a trip to Italy and the Greek Isles this very day.

Happy Birthday, my dancing queen!

[Intro]
You can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh, see that girl, watch that scene
Digging the dancing queen

[Verse 1]
Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for a place to go
Where they play the right music, getting in the swing
You come to look for a king
Anybody could be that guy
Night is young and the music’s high
With a bit of rock music, everything is fine
You’re in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance

[Chorus]
You are the dancing queen
Young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing queen
Feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah
You can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh, see that girl, watch that scene
Digging the dancing queen

[Verse 2]
You’re a teaser, you turn ’em on
Leave ’em burning and then you’re gone
Looking out for another, anyone will do
You’re in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance

[Chorus]
You are the dancing queen
Young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing queen
Feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah
You can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh, see that girl, watch that scene
Digging the dancing queen

[Outro]
Digging the dancing queen
