Song of the Day #3,920: ‘Movin’ On Up’ – Primal Scream

So many of the noteworthy albums from 1991 are loud and aggressive. From classics I’ve already covered like Nirvana’s Nevermind, Pearl Jam’s Ten and Metallica’s Metallica to lesser-known but heralded albums by Soundgarden, Fugazi, Mudhoney and Hole.

When I saw that a band called Primal Scream released a celebrated album in ’91, I assumed it would be another loud one. But Primal Scream turns out to be a much more interesting band than their name suggests. Somewhere a metal band wishes they’d gotten to that moniker first.

Screamadelica kicks off with its best track, today’s SOTD ‘Movin’ On Up.’ It’s a throwback to classic Rolling Stones with a gospel flair and it got be very excited to hear the rest of the album.

Too many of the following songs lean into the electronica and psychedelic instrumental side of the band’s repertoire, and away from good old-fashioned songwriting. That said, everything here sounds good and has a sense of melody and momentum too often lacking in this sort of music.

Screamadelica has me at least interested in hearing Primal Scream’s greatest hits, as I’m sure I would discover quite a few gems like this one.

That does it for 1991, a pretty stocked year for new music. When I return to the Decades series later this year, I’ll dive into 2001.

[Verse 1]
I was blind, now I can see
You made a believer out of me
I was blind, now I can see
You made a believer out of me

[Chorus]
I’m movin’ on up now
Getting out of the darkness
My light shines on
My light shines on
My light shines on

[Verse 2]
I was lost, now I’m found
I believe in you, I’ve got no bounds
I was lost, now I’m found
I believe in you, I’ve got no bounds

[Chorus]
I’m movin’ on up now
Getting out of the darkness
My light shines on
My light shines on
My light shines on

[Chorus]
I’m movin’ on up now
Getting out of the darkness
My light shines on
My light shines on
My light shines on

[Outro]
I’m getting out of darkness
My light shines on
I’m getting out of darkness
My light shines on
My light shines on
I’m getting out of darkness
My light shines on
I’m getting out of darkness
My light shines on
