Song of the Day #3,909: ‘Enter Sandman’ – Metallica

After counting down my own favorite albums of 1991, I’ll now turn my attention to the years’ most celebrated and important releases that somehow escaped my radar.

Kicking things off is Metallica’s self-titled fifth studio album, often referred to as The Black Album. This record is considered one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time, and is one of the best-selling albums of all time. In fact, only Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon and Carole King’s Tapestry have spent more weeks on the Billboard 200.

And I guess that just demonstrates how little I care for heavy metal. If this is the best the genre has to offer, and I still hear nothing to like, clearly it’s just not meant for me.

I waded through this thing, figuring sales figures like those couldn’t happen by accident, but I fail to hear a single memorable melody or guitar lick.

Take ‘Enter Sandman,’ Metallica’s biggest hit and signature song. I’ve listened to it twice in a row now and I still have no idea how it goes.

Maybe some kind reader will explain to me what I’m missing here.

[Verse 1]
Say your prayers, little one
Don’t forget, my son
To include everyone
I tuck you in, warm within
Keep you free from sin
Until the sandman he comes

[Pre-Chorus]
Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight

[Chorus]
Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
We’re off to never never-land

[Verse 2]
Something’s wrong, shut the light
Heavy thoughts tonight
And they aren’t of Snow White
Dreams of war
Dreams of liars
Dreams of dragons fire
And of things that will bite, yeah

[Pre-Chorus]
Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight

[Chorus]
Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
We’re off to Never Never-land

[Guitar Solo]

[Interlude]
Now I lay me down to sleep
(Now I lay me down to sleep)
Pray the lord my soul to keep
(Pray the lord my soul to keep)
And
If I die before I wake
(If I die before I wake)
Pray the lord my soul to take
(Pray the lord my soul to take)

[Bridge]
Hush, little baby, don’t say a word
And never mind that noise you heard
It’s just the beast under your bed
In your closet, in your head

[Chorus]
Exit light
Enter night
Grain of sand
Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
We’re off to Never Never-land

[Interlude]
Come on people
Hey yeah, oh oh yeah

[Outro]
We’re off to never never-land
Take my hand
We’re off to never never-land
Take my hand
We’re off to never never-land

I knew this was a big album for Metallica, but had no idea it was THAT big!

I’ve never heard the whole album, and I’m not even sure I’ve heard anything other than “Sandman” from Metallica, but I’ve heard this song a number of times over the years. I can’t say I’m a fan, but it does become memorable and even stuck in your mind after more than a few listens. It’s just that I don’t really want heavy metal stuck in my mind.

I do find it interesting, however, to have such a musically hard-edged song with lyrics for a child.
