Song of the Day #3,865: ‘It Takes Two’ – Katy Perry

I don’t know if it’s because time flies, the fickle nature of fame, or a little bit of both, but doesn’t it seem like Katy Perry was the biggest pop star in the world not too long ago and now she’s almost entirely off the radar?

I guess she’s still hosting American Idol, although it was news to me that American Idol is still on the air (revived on ABC, apparently, after closing up shop at Fox). But her last single I can recall was ‘Chained to the Rhythm.’ which came out two years ago. That’s a lifetime in her line of work.

I’m a fan of Perry’s album Teenage Dream, a deserving smash hit, but she lost me with its follow-up, Prism. ‘Roar’ was a solid first single but I can’t remember anything else on it, including today’s random SOTD.

Does Perry have a comeback in her? Will she be a trivia answer someday? Or has she already done enough to secure a legacy no matter what comes next?

What do you think?

[Verse 1]
Is Mercury in retrograde?
Or is that the excuse that I’ve always made?
‘Cause I want to blame you
But I can only blame myself
Yeah, it’s easy to throw you under the bus
Or call you crazy, while filling my cup
I say these things to hurt you
But I only hurt myself

[Pre-Chorus 1]
Oh, I can only take responsibility for me

[Chorus]
It takes two
Two sides to every story
Not just you
I can’t keep ignoring
I admit half of it, I’m not that innocent, oh yeah
It takes two
Two sides to every story
Not just me
You can’t keep ignoring
But let me be first, baby, to say “I’m sorry”

[Verse 2]
I’ve faced my demons, yeah, I paid my dues
I had to grow up, I wish you could too
I wanted to save you
But I can only save myself

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Oh, I can only be the change I want to see
Yeah, to see

[Chorus]
It takes two
Two sides to every story
Not just you
I can’t keep ignoring
I admit half of it, I’m not that innocent, oh yeah
It takes two
Two sides to every story
Not just me
You can’t keep ignoring
But let me be first, baby, to say “I’m sorry”

[Bridge]
I point my finger but it does me no good
I look in the mirror and it tells me the truth, yeah
Why are these lessons always learned the hard way?
Is it too late to change?

[Chorus]
It takes two
Two sides to every story
Not just you
I can’t keep ignoring
I admit half of it, I’m not that innocent, oh yeah
It takes two
Two sides to every story
Not just me
You can’t keep ignoring
But let me be first, baby, to say “I’m sorry”

  1. Dana Gallup says:

Hard to say whether she will have a sustained career and achieve any kind of legendary status akin to Madonna, but I think she is more likely to be in the same realm as Mariah Carey.
