Song of the Day 3,798: ‘Every Little Thing She Does is Magic’ – The Police

From the late 70s to the early 80s, The Police released five albums, every one of which went platinum in multiple countries. When all was said and done, they sold more than 100 million records worldwide.

I’ve always known 1983’s Synchronicity was a monster hit — it went eight times platinum in the U.S. alone and spent 17 weeks at #1 on the Billboard chart. But I underestimated how success of the band’s earlier efforts.

1981’s Ghost in the Machine, the band’s penultimate album, was one of those hits, second only to Synchronicity in sales. The album signaled a departure from the reggae flavors of the band’s first few releases, introducing synthesizers and horns to the mix for a poppier sound. The opening trio of songs are the best known: ‘Spirits in the Material World,’ ‘Every Little Thing She Does is Magic,’ and ‘Invisible Sun.’

Though Ghost in the Machine was a big hit, it marked the beginning of the end for the band. Guitarist Andy Summers lamented the move away from their jammier beginnings, lamenting that he and drummer Stewart Copeland “were ending up backing a singer doing his pop songs.”

A few years later, Sting launched a very successful and lengthy solo career, though he never reached #1 with another album after Synchronicity.

[Verse 1]
Though I’ve tried before to tell her
Of the feelings I have for her in my heart
Every time that I come near her
I just lose my nerve as I’ve done from the start

[Chorus]
Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she does just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on

[Verse 2]
Do I have to tell the story
Of a thousand rainy days since we first met
It’s a big enough umbrella
But it’s always me that ends up getting wet

[Chorus]
Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she does just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on

[Bridge]
I resolved to call her up
A thousand times a day
Ask her if she’ll marry me
In some old fashioned way
But my silent fears have gripped me
Long before I reach the phone
Long before my tongue has tripped me
Must I always be alone

[Chorus]
Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she does just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on
Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she does just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on

[Outro]
Every little thing, every little thing
Every, every little thing
Every little, every little, every little
Every little thing she does
Every little thing she does
Every little thing she does
Every little thing she does
That she does is magic
Eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh
Eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh
Eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh
Eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh, eee oh oh
Every little thing
Every little thing
Every little thing, she does is magic, magic, magic
Magic, magic, magic
Ey oh, yo oh
Eee oh oh oh oh oh

Do I have to tell the story
Of a thousand rainy days since we first met
It’s a big enough umbrella
But it’s always me that ends up getting wet

  1. Dana Gallup says:

Both this album and the Police generally were huge among my junior high friends. I remember the band playing a concert here (probably the old Sportatorium) and kids wearing the concert t shirts for months, probably years after. I liked the Police, but more as a casual fan, becoming far more interested once Sting went solo.
